SYC Championship 2008

I have been study the ranking board and I have some comment to add.

As far as I can see - DNS and DNF get 181 points. I don't think this justify those members who complete the races.

Leg 1: DNS and DNF should have at least + 322 points (last boat) added.
Leg 2: DNS and DNF should have at least + 309 points (last boat) added.
And the list must be adjusted while the other bots/members are coming in.

e.g. If I landed on DNF in the first race I would ended up as #151.
Thnx - that was an error!
Fixed.

Hi !
i habe a question concerning the bonus points. Are there all races counted or only the races of the last 6 month ? I wonder how some sailors have more than 2000 bonus points ?

I agree with dirtrider that the calculation of participation points is very unclear at this moment. For instance, I now have 1813 points. How can this be if I should have 50 points per race? I think the calculation algorithm should be published.

The differences in point come from the period before we set this 50 point participation points bonus. We have tried several systems and some older users have still got some participation points from this period.

The difference will even out once those races are beyond the 6 month line.

Ranking systems in sailing has been up to discussion many times. It almost always falls back on the standard lowscoring system described in ISAF racing rules. Why not use it? Well tested and described (end of discussion?) and as I see it it will apply very well to SYC ranking system.
For example: Use latest 15 races to conform a serie. Winner gets 1 point, 2nd place 2 points aso. You don't count 1 of 5 races.
What I like with this system compared to current one:
- Sailing IRL is not about winning 5 races of 30. It's about not making big mistakes.
- A 5th place is worth the same for every race. It's not my fault the others didn't show up.
- You have to participate, but if you miss a race you can still win.
- Same system as IRL

I emphatically agree!!! Sail-Online is about simulating real life sailing. Adopting an already established international scoring system not only provides a tested system, it elevates Sail-Online to be closer to real sailing.

I agree fully with Niklas and Bruce.

The ISAF system is fair and honours a steady performance while not overrating single good results or single bad results.

Independantly of this the sailonline ranking is wrong at some point. The last edition of the ranking in the wiki is dated March 31 this year, which is more than 6 month ago. So there should be no races with bonuspoints different to 50 in the ranking anymore. Bonuspoints greater than 2000 are strange anyhow, there have been 24 races in the last 6 month so the maximum bonus is 1200 points... I hope I counted correctly, this might be one or two races off, but there is no explaination for more than 2000 bonus points in the ranking.

Please check the calculation of the ranking, it is really hard to understand for new members, as a chance to get much higher than rank 100 is not visible.

The sea is lovely, dark, and deep, But I have promises to keep, And miles to sail before I sleep, And miles to sail before I sleep.
Hi! We listen to our community. You know that. Our ranking is a bit embarrasing at the moment and we will redo it. Most likely we will do the ISAF-ranking. Have patience please. :-) Thing is that we NEED to do some other development first. E.g. we have a date-line-crossing to take care of...
...one of the guys behind the game...
Fine, Jakob. As long as we know you will look into this at some time it's good.

Datelines can be tricky, I know that ;) My thoughts are with you and Kalle.

Poor chap just joined SYC.

Total rank #338 with -393 points, of which -798 are bonus points for participation.

Don't know what he did to upset you. ;-)

PS
I think your doing a really really good job.

Trev.
