Windjunks, Google calendar is functional. :-)

I have added 2 entries. Can you see them?

I've been working with google calendar as well. If Kalle can set us up an apps account that pretty much solves that problem. We can keep the public and dev-calendars seperate, and it will be an easy addition to embed the public one somewhere on SOL when the time comes.

Apps automatically provides an email solution as well - people will need a gmail account to log in, so it might as well be an @sailonline one. Makes managing a mailing list easy.

I'm away today - can I suggest that anyone looking to get involved in some of the grunt work translate one or more of the entries on Incognito's list? Might as well jump in.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Incognito but I really don't think I'm capable enough to sit on the committee. 1. I'm not very computer literate, 2. I'm not much of a yachtie and am a SOL rookie and 3. I'm a very busy Project Manager at work.

That being said Ill gladly help out where I can If no-one else comes forward.

I am working over some ideas in my head at the moment and would like some consideration made to the following thoughts...

1. The SOL races as we have them now are great but is there no way we can level the playing field somehow for a few races? Eg. Have "Blind" races where the "Routers" cannot download the weather and therefor we all dance to the same tune?

2. Id like to see a future development where we can sail in teams somehow. A relay event or a medley of boats in the team. Something that brings us together at a new level somehow.
Nothing to do with recent posts - I have translated the viking raid proposal into something more digestible. See attachment ....

That's great Incognito! I was tempted to attach a simple kmz, but your fully fleshed out version is a model for future proposals.
Thanks, 76Trombones. That was a bit meant like that ...

76Trombones, can you explain a bit what is this apps account thing for the ignorant that I am?

Have you got the racing calendar already?

I also suggest that we open a separate thread regarding the schedule, and start to get our hands dirty. This one is going in to many different directions and is becoming too long.

Google calendar - I got about as far as RemyBlom. Learning any new tool is a bit of a hassle, but any of the calendar tools would work. We can just uses regular list too, for that matter - maybe need to put horse in front of cart...

Google apps gives you the same tools that you get as a regular user, but as a domain under which you can have additional users. Would work, but also it's one more thing to admin.

Yahoo groups might be better, and it would certainly lessen the load on SOL, which is at least half the battle. EDIT: It looks like yahoo groups IS better - see following!

------------------

I've gone ahead and set up a yahoo group:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sailonline_rc

It is open for the time being, but in a week or so I will restrict membership so that new accounts need to be approved (essential anti-spam measure) Can people take a look and let me know what they think?

We can control access to the calendar, posts, and email lists separately, add admins and moderators etc if and when needed. For now it's open to everyone who has something to contribute.

Keep this thread for talking about what we need to do and maybe try the group for actually doing it? If we try it and don't like it that's fine too, and we'll have learned something.

76Trombones
If you decide we need a mailing list let me know. I can set one up on our mailman server at the University. Just need the list of email addresses to load. It will also archive any posts and we can restrict them to list membership.
...one of the guys behind the game...

Sinbad by Balloon 2025 - Toamasina to Baia de l'Oiseau

You may recall that when last we visited Madagascar in the company of Sinbad, the Sultan commanded our intrepid inspirator to seek out fabled islands where in Summer the sun barely set. We did and we returned but the Sultan wasn’t happy with Sinbad’s report, so here we go again, now by SOL Balloon instead of sailing vessel. Expect to be in the air for at least 2100nm and depending on how the wind brings us, anything between two weeks and two months before we shall descend at the Sultan’s given coordinates!

Red Eye - Round White Island 2025

We remain in New Zealand for our second “Red Eye Special” and another IRL Kiwi classic - the Round White Island! IRL still “currently on hiatus” following the island’s eruption of 2019, this race was last raced on SOL in 2020. It’s about 300nm there - out the Hauraki Gulf and south down to the island in the Bay of Plenty - and back to Auckland. This year we’ll be racing in our ever-popular take on the TP-52. Hau tika!

Moheli PYOC 2025

For our first sprint of Q2, we will re-visit the African archipelago nation, L’Union des Comoros, and its most southern island, Moheli, in the Mozambique Channel. Created by MustangMark in 2014 this is a “Pick Your Own Course” round the island, approximately 20nm in our First 27. Expect winds to be light and variable; we are in the Tropics.

Africa by Sea - Tangier to Abidjan

Whatever about pharaoh Necho II’s Phoenician expedition of the 7th C BCE, the Carthaginian Hanno the Navigator with more certainty sailed south from Tangier to explore the West African coast two centuries later, but how far he got is a matter of more conjecture. However, if he did the 2300nm to today’s Ivory Coast he would have found little there other than good shelter in the vast lagoons behind the dunes, much the same as today, excepting the highly industrialized port of Abidjan. Not a great haven for a stop-over but let’s take the 90ft Monohull anyway.

Melbourne Osaka Cup Double-Handed Yacht Race 2025

Welcome once again to what these days is Sailonline’s almost annual virtual Melbourne to Osaka Yacht Race. In real life, this double-handed 5500 nm race between these two sister cities, one deep in the southern hemisphere, the other high in the northern hemisphere, is run every four to five years, and this year is such a year. So, this year’s online version is in sync with the Melbourne Osaka Cup 2025 organised by the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria (ORCV), and the Sandringham (SYC) and Osaka Hokko (OHYC) yacht clubs. We’ll be racing the well-known First 40, a popular size of boat which should be a good match for many of the boats entered in the real race. With the doldrums unavoidably lying across our course, you can expect to be at virtual sea for at least a month!
