I will try setting up a Google Calendar. Never worked with it before but it looks promising.
Features are: I can give people the right to add/edit/etc events. All events are public. You can easily embed this calendar in any website. Or you can just import the calendar into your Office suite or iCal for Mac...
--------------------

I was indeed thinking of something like that. I use a yahoo mailbox, which provides both a mailbox and a calendar, plus other things. Were you thinking of using a google mailbox, or another google application? Might be a good idea to combine calendar and mailbox at once ...

In my idea, SOLers should be encouraged to send their race suggestions to this mailbox. Therefore, I would like to first get the green light from SOL administrators.

We also need to think under what name we create the mailbox. Probably something like SailOnline.RaceCommittee

I took a quick look at google mail and google calendar. Unlike Yahoo, mailbox and calendar seem to be separate applications.

Perhaps that it is better so. I was already thinking that we might use more than one calendar:
- One calendar for real races
- One calendar for races suggested by SOLers
- One calendar for races decided by Race Committee

Please let me know if you need any email lists etc setup, I could set up a sailonline.org google apps account.
look here for calendar

There seems to be a bug in the timezone. Trying to solve that.

Other committee members that are interested in looking into the calendar from an admin point of view, pass me your email:

Yes, that would be nice Kalle.

All the members of the race committee should have access to this mailbox. Is that possible?

I was also wondering what would happen if several members of the race committee try to access the mailbox at the same moment.

What email address were you thinking of BTW?

Francois
Apart from the fact wheither we should have a seperate email(list), I think race requests are better gathered via a forum. This keeps them (and the discussion about it) more open for everybody to see and contribute.

This would keep things within the userbase and will keep the SRC (sailonline race committee) more open, less secret...

An emaillist which forwards all incoming mail at something like racecommittee@sailonline.org to all our private mailaccounts could be used for internal communication. But this could also be done in the forum. Advantages of using the forum instead of mail is the fact that all communication is preserved on the server. There is no need to maintain the mailinglist (less hassle for SOL-people) and again the open character of the SRC.

Just my thoughts, but I think it is best to keep things as simple as possible. All we really need to operate as a SRC is
a) Own category within the forum
b) A Calendar app of some sort
c) A lot of ideas for races... =)

I just discovered that Yahoo has a 'group' feature that could nicely meet our needs:

http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/

There might be something similar in Google.
I just discovered you'll need a google account to access the google Calendar app as an admin.

I am happy to input/partake in a committee.

Will the committee vote on stuff?. . or will a chairman make final decisions ?(in which case perhaps the chair should be unnamed to stop the poor guy/gal being hassled?

Camel or Balloon - Khartoum to N'Djamena

As there is a lull in the calendar, your PRO has decided to risk an experiment – a balloon race over land, using a workaround to eliminate the recognition of water/land transitions. If it fails, the server may crash, and we abandon PDQ, hopefully after leg 7 of the ABS race to Suez has been decided, and before the start of the 1st OCC of Q4. Camel or Balloon – c 1000 nm from a field on the north bank of the Blue Nile at Khartoum to a field on the north bank of the Chari River at N'Djamena!
