Thanks Tuule.
I'm using windows and didn't know that :-)
My I ask what does VMC stands for?
Velocity Made on Course, Velocity Made good to Course or similar.

VMC is a generalisation of VMG. (But outside of sailonline VMC and VMG may sometimes be used interchangably).

VMG tells you how fast you are moving into the wind (ignoring any movement sideways compared to the wind direction). When sailing upwind you want to maximise VMG, when downwind, minimise (VMG is negative in that case).

VMC tells you how fast you are moving in some direction (ignoring any movement sideways compared to this direction). To calculate VMC you first need to choose the direction. I believe this direction is called "bearing" in Aaron's tool. This "bearing" can also be automatically calculated when you enter coordinates. If you enter the true wind direction (TWD) as bearing, your VMC will equal your VMG.

outlaw wrote some posts on solfans about using VMC for various things. The concept of VMC is very important for a full analysis of your position within the fleet and your route to the target.
Thank you so much for the detailed and fast ifnormation.
What has happened to the AGage's Optimal Angles tool? I used to be able to call it up quite simply, and use both it and the Isochrones facility. Now it requires several steps each time and I get only a little screen that is specific to one race only. If I wish to use it in another race, I have to call it up with Google all over again, and the Isochrone tool is not available. I was recently 'converted' to Windows 10, and it has disrupted all my previous systems and names, so it may be the cause of all my problems.
If it breaks, it's not strong enough--if it doesn't, it's too heavy.
Rod - Before you type your boatname and password,
click on races and choose All Races at the bottom.
Then you you don't have to log in and out for each race.
See attached screenshot.

I made a very minimal VMG calculator. Go to http://sol.kroppyer.nl/ and there's a link "optimal angles" on the left. It should open a pop up where you can log in with your sailonline username and password. It reads the polar from sailonline and the current wind direction and speed. You can also enter wind direction and speed manually. You can be logged in in multiple races simultaneously by having multiple windows open.

In the future I might add some more features, like VMC and/or a visual aid. But this will probably require a bit of UI design as well to make it look simple. As always: if something doesn't work, or you have ideas for improvement, just let me know.

That doesn't look anything like what I get when I call up AG's Optimum Angles Tool. What URL are you calling up?

Jakob's Birthday BBQ Race 2024

Sailonline had two founders and Jakob, the more senior of the two, has his birthday in April which we always like to celebrate with a race through the Stockholm Archipelago from Revengegrundet Lighthouse to his mooring at Baggensfjärden. Melbourne to Osaka Prelude 2024

Welcome once again to what these days is Sailonline’s almost annual virtual Melbourne to Osaka Yacht Race. In real life, this double-handed 5500 nm race between these two sister cities, one deep in the southern hemisphere, the other high in the northern hemisphere, is run every four to five years, and is planned to be held again in 2025, so this race is a Prelude in partnership with the Melbourne Osaka Cup 2025 organising committee collaborating with the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria (ORCV), and the Sandringham (SYC) and Osaka Hokko (OHYC) yacht clubs. On this occasion, we’ll be racing the well-known First 40, a popular size of boat for a long-distance double-handed race. With the doldrums unavoidably lying across the track, you can expect to be at virtual sea for at least a month!

The Beagle in the Straits of Magellan 2024

Both before and after visiting the Falkland Islands, the Beagle extensively explored the south eastern coast of South America, hither and thither, from north of the Rio Plate to the tip of Tierra del Fuego, but it was not till the end of June 1834 that the ship made it into the Pacific Ocean, transiting via the Straits of Magellan. Online in 2024, the choice is yours - passage the strait or round the cape; 400nm or more in your Class B Tall Ship.
