As mentioned in the chat, a little reminder for Rum Chaser ;) about the wonderful mini transat:

Prologue October 6, 2013
race start Douarnenez October 13, 2013 at 13h

Arrival in the Canary Islands between 23 and 26 October 2013.

Restart from the Canary Islands on 9 or 10 November 2013.

Arrival in Guadeloupe between 23 and 30 November 2013.

Too bad I won't be able to join the first leg due to the fact I will be kitesurfing the waves at Tarifa!

http://www.minitransat.fr/
My favorite sailboat? The Shinn Speedball kiteboard ;)
I do not see a virtual partner for this, could be an opportunity for us to team up. Would one of our French SOLers like to approach the organisers? SOL admin can help with what to say.
Virtual Regatta has this race on its website... like you Scotsman I got excited when I saw no reference to the race on the official website... but this happened with the Fastnet race and the Clipper.. the official sites didn't mention the virtual race until much closer to the event. If you look at the VR web-page you will see what they have "sewn up" ;-(

SO.. unless someone has a very good contact with the organisers of the Mini Transat, we are going to have to do our own thing.. within the bounds of copyright etc

With the advent of the transition, I am hopeful that new management will get appropriate legal advice so that we will know without doubt what we can do. Right now we are relying on initial legal advice and my (and other "legal SOLers'" personal judgment of such matters. As my career was financial legal and not copyright or branding I am, probably, being a bit too cautious but.. as we all know, the potential downside is too great to risk not being cautious until we are sure!! :-D
A couple of SOLers have just asked about this race again and.. I pointed them in the direction of this thread.

I have, however, just spent a wee while browsing the official website:

http://www.minitransat.fr/

and can see no mention of a virtual partner.

CORRECTION Schakel has just pointed out there is a virtual partner on the website.

-------

I have drawn this thread to the attention of the new powers-that-be and see whether or not they want us to race across the Atlantic in a few days' time!

A east to west TransAt is a great idea. However considering problems with the Mini 6.5 transat. Maybe we should consider something like the ARC. http://www.worldcruising.com/arc/event.aspx

We could run a feeder race to the Canaries for the Nov start. It'll take at least that long for the Mini 6.5 to get there anyway.

I doubt that this race will start before next Saturday (Oct 16). http://www.passageweather.com/
Latest info from the website shows

pic of meteogram

along with the note:

The attached image shows the wind situation last night on the Bay of Biscay and along the coast of Portugal. Clearly securely moored inside Port Rhu is the right place to be. The fleet will remaine at Code Red over the weekend, but there is the possibility of a weather window opening towards the end of the week

That only goes out three days. At the very best upwind speeds in these boats, it'll take 3.3 ~ 3.4 days to get to Cabo Vilan. These big lows are running in 2.5 day cycles. Here is 7 day forecast: http://www.passageweather.com

We don't have to worry about broken boats, or endangered lives, but the MT folks do. I'd be surprised if they start before next Sunday. Maybe you could check with Eddie and see what he thinks?

CA 500 2024

In 2019, the organisers of the California Race Week introduced a new longer distance event for the world’s very largest maxi trimarans in town that year intent on setting new records for the TransPac Ocean Race on its 50th anniversary. This CA 500, 500nm from San Francisco to San Diego, was repeated in 2023, but this year it will be an online only event, as it is a lot more straightforward to get a fleet of Maxi trimarans out on the virtual water, than in real life.

Neumayer Station to Biscoe Wharf 2024

It’s Autumn now in Antarctica, the sun is permanently below the horizon, but during the day, from c 0900 to c 1700 local time, there is some twilight – nautical twilight, not to be confused with civil twilight which is brighter. The penguins are starting to huddle together to keep warm and the sea ice is growing. Time to get back to Biscoe Wharf then, before the water becomes impassible. Including a detour past Argentina’s main two Antarctic stations, it’s only 1900nm, so, although we’ll be in a hurry, we will take the bigger, better ice-classed Paratii 2 once more, just to be sure!

Melbourne to Osaka Prelude 2024

Welcome once again to what these days is Sailonline’s almost annual virtual Melbourne to Osaka Yacht Race. In real life, this double-handed 5500 nm race between these two sister cities, one deep in the southern hemisphere, the other high in the northern hemisphere, is run every four to five years, and is planned to be held again in 2025, so this race is a Prelude in partnership with the Melbourne Osaka Cup 2025 organising committee collaborating with the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria (ORCV), and the Sandringham (SYC) and Osaka Hokko (OHYC) yacht clubs. On this occasion, we’ll be racing the well-known First 40, a popular size of boat for a long-distance double-handed race. With the doldrums unavoidably lying across the track, you can expect to be at virtual sea for at least a month!
