    Agage's 100 Race 2014

SOL's gift to the memory of AGage was a year long series of races circumnavigating Australia. This was the final sprint of that memorial and now being raced to mark the 2nd anniversary of the too-sudden end to the life of this remarkable SOLer. These were Aaron's homewaters - he was a total competitor so... race to win!

dtayls 2:20 THE SECRETARY has finished. Finish time was around 0155UTC. Only cruising this time, The Secretary is one of the most important yachts in this race/rally.

dtayls 2:21 The M2V race would not exist if Robyn had not said "Take me somewhere warm George". Both are on board Da Sec for the Rally this time.

    JULY 5, 2014

Sailonline is delighted to again be sailing a virtual version of the biennial Colin Archer Memorial Race. This race has been run every two years since 1982, in honour of Colin Archer who is buried in Larvik, Norway.

Since 1982 when the race started with 7 boats the number of entrants has been increasing and by 2008, 120 boats started in various classes. SOL won’t be sailing a whaleboat or the Fram, though, but instead a Dufour 40.

The race starts in Lauwersoog, a small fishing village near the Waddenzee in Holland/The Netherlands and finishes near Larvik.

We will have to cross one of the busiest shipping lanes above the Frisian Isles so pay attention to crossing traffic near the TE buoys.

Remember to take part in the parade of sails after you’ve finished paying your respects to Colin Archer.

  • Tall Ships Season 2014
    Board » Races

For the fourth year, Sailonline is delighted to be the virtual partner of Sail Training International for its summer season of tall ships racing.

This year will see three events in the North Sea (a race from Harlingen in the Netherlands to Fredrikstad in Norway, a Cruise-in-Company from Fredrikstad to Bergen in Norway, a race from Bergen to Esbjerg in Denmark) and one off the coast of the British Isles (Falmouth to Royal Greenwich Tall Ships' Regatta ending in the heart of London).

The Tall Ships Races 2014, organised by Sail Training International are being run during the months of July, August and September and Sailonline's virtual races will mirror the schedules of the real events as closely as possible.

This virtual sailing experience runs hand in hand with Sail Training International's mission - the development and education of young people through the sail training experience, regardless of nationality, culture, religion, gender or social background. Sail Training International and Sailonline both count heavily on volunteer support with financial gain excluded from the equation.

Sailing a tall ship, whether real or virtual - making navigational decisions in real wind conditions - can be a surprising experience, especially if you are more familiar with modern yachts, and makes one realise how truly remarkable were the sailors of bygone days who managed so successfully to sail the globe. This is truly a fun as well as an educational and insightful experience for all those who, for whatever reason, wish to sail tall ships.

There are four classes of Tall Ship in the real races, ranging from the biggest Class A Square Rigged ships of more than 40m in length, down to training yachts of 9.14m. Sailonline has developed performance polars based on published data for several tall ships, and will be sailing a Class A ship in each event.

Start learning the basics today on Sailonline so you will be ready for your Tall Ships experience!
