The annotation at this mark isn't very helpful either. It isn't ambiguous but a different design for annotating these marks should be devised.
  • Re: Rounding a mark

    You are of course correct.
Unfortunately I did not have my spectacles on and was working on a very small screen.
A caption 'Pass to Starboard' would have been much more helpful and appropriate.

    But thanks anyway.

I did go the wrong way around it! But 'Pass NE' is a very misleading caption!

    The original post follows:
I went way beyond a mark but have rounded it but I'm now going backwards - my ranking is going up!

My boat is ehenryb; the mark is Seal Island in the Two Oceans Doublecross race.

The attached file shows my track passing it to port heading north and to port heading south.

Bob has nailed it - it only seems to happen in the 'suggestions' forum.

There appears to be a problem with the way the Forum Pages are formatted. See my attachment. There is an overlap between the forum column and the RACES column. This happens in two browsers I have tried: Firefox and IE.

I have not experienced any changes in the length of anything but have noticed differences in the width of paths at different levels of magnification.

How does one specify and hang on to a waypoint between sessions? I made a suggestion above that I thought could be used for that purpose - but never really got a response!

As I see it VMG is 'Velocity Made Good' directly to windward; whereas, VMC is also a velocity made good, but to where? If it is to the destination, then it assumes that one is taking a direct great-circle path to the nearest point about which one has to turn. As well most sailors know, that isn't necessarily optimal.

In my youth I raced a Tornado and often found I could beat the competition, to a downwind mark, by tacking downwind - the boat was so fast on a broad reach that it got to a downwind mark much more quickly NOT heading straight for the mark.

If there is a way of leaving waypoints on one's maps, across sessions, please tell me how.

A Happy New Year to all SOLists.

I am a little bit at a loss. Please bear with me - exactly what is a VMC? We all use these acronyms but sometimes they mean different things to different people! Stu/Berth felt providing them would make things too easy; I don't see how anything would be easier.

I already take all the polar data, interpolate all the velocities, work up to 24 hours ahead of my present position, download wind forecasts from two sources, compare my progress with all the boats around me, and find that none of this helps. To do well I have to be online during as much of the race as possible.

The single biggest determinant of my success is how much time I can spend online.

Thanks for the best virtual sailing on the Internet - and I'll have it as easy as you can make it.

It would be nice, when planning future course changes, to be able to drop markers onto the map.
I suggest another tool - for markers: once the tool is selected, a left click would drop a marker and a right click would remove any markers within 0.5nm of the cursor position. If you log off all the markers should vanish. Markers could be small orange triangles with their centers at the clicked position.

Thanks RainbowChaser. I did do the course - and it did come up with Pass NW.

The note is excellent but the game map doesn't indicate 'pass west.'

It’s late summer now in Antarctica, the sun will still not set, but the Emperor chicks are hatched. Let’s yacht on from Australia’s Casey Station, destination Germany’s Neumayer Station! Our route takes us past Molodezhnaya Stancija, Russia’s self-styled capital of Antarctica, as well as Mirney (RUS), Davis (AUS), Mawson (AUS), Syowa (JAP) and Maitri (IND) down the full length of the continent’s east coast.
