Board » General Discussion » RRS 28.1

Following this Rule, I looped around the finish line for leg 3 of the Bosphore race.

Other boats did not. They crossed the line without completing the course from the required side.

No protest of RC, but just a question. Where was RRS 28.1 removed as a requirement?
Possibly the bad positioning of the finish line is to blame. In this case, the simplicity factor of having fewer rounding marks has made the line at 90 degrees from the last mark, have a bias and bad interpretation. Further it seems most finishes in SoL can be over the line from either direction.

Perhaps having the finish further inside Brest harbour would force all to finish in a West to East direction.

Against this is the desire to allow DC's and CC's to be set for a race finish, so finish lines are often offshore more than normal.

In the Antwerpen race, the finish was well up the river, in a much narrower channel than Brest.

What do people want? Comments please.

If it breaks, it's not strong enough!
I missed the last finish because of bad calculated DCs (and finished later from the wrong side). There should be an easy approach for those fools who still try to sleep 3 h or more, like me.
Where does it say you have to cross the line from a certain side?? As far as i am aware you can, and have always been able to cross the line from either side!!.
Rule 28.1 is rounding a mark the wrong way!!
rule 28.1...A boat shall start, leave each mark on the required side in the correct order and finish!!

The finish line may be crossed from any direction.
...one of the guys behind the game...
Heh! Sounds like SNG and ISAF . . .

No quarrel with the boss. Time to kill the thread.

Melbourne to Osaka Prelude 2024

Welcome once again to what these days is Sailonline’s almost annual virtual Melbourne to Osaka Yacht Race. In real life, this double-handed 5500 nm race between these two sister cities, one deep in the southern hemisphere, the other high in the northern hemisphere, is run every four to five years, and is planned to be held again in 2025, so this race is a Prelude in partnership with the Melbourne Osaka Cup 2025 organising committee collaborating with the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria (ORCV), and the Sandringham (SYC) and Osaka Hokko (OHYC) yacht clubs. On this occasion, we’ll be racing the well-known First 40, a popular size of boat for a long-distance double-handed race. With the doldrums unavoidably lying across the track, you can expect to be at virtual sea for at least a month!
