Board » General Discussion » Interesting videos on the Beru to Bora Bora race

This is a great doco about these early Pacific voyages. When I was on Kiribati in the early seventies, I helped a bit with the construction of the float (ama) for this voyaging canoe, and went for a sail on her.

The video is here. It is great viewing for anyone doing this race.

The first two parts of the video are here.

The floats for the canoes used to be salvaged large logs which had drifted down from Canada or the NW of the States..light softwoods. Because the Brits banned voyaging in 1910 or so, they didn't have any logs.

Hence, the first float was of hardwood and proved to have too little buoyancy and too much weight. They subsequently built a plywood one which you see in most of the video.

This in turn proved too buoyant, so we had to strengthen the platform joining the float to the canoe. That was the stage I was involved in, in a small way. But it was great fun to be involved, and even more fun to sail on her.
I am so pleased you posted this info... will be linked in the Race Report for sure :-)

Tobruk to Iskenderun 2026

Welcome to the fourth of our nine races across the length and breadth of the Magical Mediterranean Sea, and the second that is not in partnership with a real-life event, this time for good reason, which we won’t get into here. From Tobruk to Iskenderun it’s 670nm in length, with the added complication that the island of Cyprus will be in your way. Hoping, possibly forlornly, for plenty of downwind sailing, we’ll take the Lagoon 55 for the voyage!
