Aaron, I agree - there are too many requests for things to make it easier - those who want to win will work on their own methods for getting best course - hasn't helped me much yet, but having fun trying :-)
Well there are people that are using weather routing software etc. so it wasn't about making the game easier
I guess the difference is do you want SoL to be fun or a chore or put from the other perspective, simple or realistic (for some definition of realistic). We can be reasonably sure which one is stronger commercially.

Personally, not being a professional navigator and route planner or experienced ocean race skipper I welcome any tools that give me information and if they're integrated into the clent even better.

Perhaps for the hard-core there could be an 'ironman' button for each race where you get a basic straight predictor, a polar diagram (without current line and dot maybe) and weather. They can even get highlighted on the leaderboard if you like.

Of course there's no way to check if they're using external software though and since the client data is avaliable for anyone who has programming ability, they could even be running their own client.
a6km: You can always download Sailplanner yourself. While I will sometimes consult this software, I never rely on it or follow the exact course it recomends. Mostly I use it as a learning tool, by determining what I think is a good route, then afterwards consulting sailplanner to compare, then try to understand why it reccomends a different path than I came up with.
It wont ever give you the best route for SOL though because the polars are slightly different between the two, and the weather resloution is also different.
I help develop the client interface for the best online ocean racing sim there is... __/)/)_/)__

Melbourne to Osaka Prelude 2024

Welcome once again to what these days is Sailonline’s almost annual virtual Melbourne to Osaka Yacht Race. In real life, this double-handed 5500 nm race between these two sister cities, one deep in the southern hemisphere, the other high in the northern hemisphere, is run every four to five years, and is planned to be held again in 2025, so this race is a Prelude in partnership with the Melbourne Osaka Cup 2025 organising committee collaborating with the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria (ORCV), and the Sandringham (SYC) and Osaka Hokko (OHYC) yacht clubs. On this occasion, we’ll be racing the well-known First 40, a popular size of boat for a long-distance double-handed race. With the doldrums unavoidably lying across the track, you can expect to be at virtual sea for at least a month!
