Works very well and is fun and informative. It would be even better if more solers would use it. I encourage all to make it a browser tab next to your races and sign up.

Thank you, Huib. One question - Is the "Sailor Chef On Board" flag mean someone other than the skipper has cooked a meal or two? -:) If so, you might want to add 'boatsitting' to the description. If not, then how about a "boatsitting has occurred" flag?

The flags are made by solers. I made a couple to start with, but the sol sailor chef on board was (IIRC) made by scara. As far as I understand, the flag indicates that smoke coming from your boat is not from the engine, but from cooking. Similarly, I suppose that any humming sounds, high boatspeeds, stuttering flow of water through an exhaust-like pipe or a raise in on board temperature are the effects of furious cooking and quality food as well.

The idea of the flag pole is that you can't force people to fly certain flags. Flying a flag is your choice, just like you can choose to restrict yourself more than the sol rules do by adding personal rules, like "No routing software". By flying a flag you can signal this choice to others.

Since boatsitting is allowed, a "boatsitting has occurred" flag does not signal any additional restrictions, a "I don't use boatsitters"-flag however, does. So such a flag will work better, I think.

But, most important: you are all free to create flags and give them meaning. It's also up to you to enforce any additional rules associated with a particular flag.

Panama Canal 2026


Sailing in the Panama Canal isn't the best idea, and organizing a race there is simply impossible and unfeasible IRL. In SOL, we have slightly different rules, so why not? A 36nm, frantic race awaits us, and the fast Dehler 30 OD will help us navigate the Panama Canal with grace.
