Cool! ;-)

Moving the 2nd mark from the top of the Labrador Peninsula to a Finish in Frobisher bay and then stopping again at Tuktoyaktuk might make for a good 3 leg split?

If we're serious about this one, I'd be happy to help out with placenames etc as well. Lots of places to explore.

The framework is there already.

There's actually a NW passage race already in the system as well. JuJu and I match raced it a few years ago but it turned out not to be possible to run properly at the time due to limitations of SOL's weather coverage.

The race was from Iqaluit to the Bering Strait, with free choice of routing. I solved the problem of race length (long) by providing a polar for a ridiculously fast iceboat. Top speed of 123knots - huge perf hit... We might need to wait a few months for freeze-up.

"A flight-of-fancy race through the Northwest Passage in iceboats. We leave Frobisher bay on Baffin Island and finish in the Bering Strait."

"It hath frozen over, and the result is 3000nm of cold hard ice. Not ones to waste this once in a lifetime opportunity, SOL has gathered in Iqaluit and cobbled together a fleet of Arctic-hardened ice yachts from salvaged aircraft bits, oil drums and pieces of whalebone. There will be a few hours of daylight left when we head out, but we'll be heading for the land of eternal darkness and bitter cold, so bring your headlamp, helmet and wooliest mittens as we reenact the attempts of the early explorers in a quest for the fastest ever transit of the fabled Northwest Passage."
So.... which one are we sailing?

or

2) http://tinyurl.com/8yursww

And we're off!!

SP
For my version - the Skeeter actually! or at least that's sort of more or less what I modelled the polar after (with a healthy suspension of disbelief). The 3 leg version could be sailed in any of our boats really, a couple of beach cats have made it across...
How is this one coming on? Would be a good'un I think :-)
Here is it. After a few GE crashes and learning how to prepare the routes. It a big race, over 13,000nm and will probably need 3 months.

Please have a look and see what you think.

Cheers, Kevin

Hi

Interesting race, I will have a good look at it later and do some basic setup work.

Splitting a leg up sounds like a good plan. Having on giant leg would be a challenge but not fun for the little more casual racers.

I will let you know once I had a closer look.
I am a ex-admin of SOL who joins in from time to time.
There are 5 legs:

Olso - St Johns 2709NM
St Johns - Herschel Island 3564NM
Herschel Island - Pevek 1617NM
Pevek - Arkhangelsk 3058NM
Arkhangelsk - Oslofjord 2068NM
That is a good break-up of the race IMO. I like it a lot. Run it in NH summer so it stays light with no nav. lights
