It's a "split spanker". The Germans liked them. I've only seen the two parts called upper/lower and it's supposed to make trimming the sail balance easier.

The polar is a slightly SOLified version of the polar for Gorch Fock published in "Seamanship in the age of sail". The upgraded client should be happy with it, and it looks like fun! The crafty Tallship organisers have laid out the races to be mostly downwind though - sneaky. ;-)

I'm sorry about the "down wind" part. These SOL races are supposed to be difficult, to challenge the seamanship and navigation ability of the SOLers...not to make them "Easy"
If it breaks, it's not strong enough--if it doesn't, it's too heavy.
I suppose I can see the attraction IRL (which we are mirroring)... No such practicalities in SOL - we can (and will! ;-) ) run some tough ones with the square rig polars.

So... 'tis a work in progress!!

Yes I got your mail and I like the progress. At least we can be ready for the next "year" TSR.

But I fear that SOL can get a large fan base so that we older SOLers will drown in the regattas. Students on these ships and their family around the world is a huge crowd of people and I'm no longer sure what I have initiated :-)

Can SOL cope with this ?

We will probably get a large amount of people who only log on to follow TSR and students. Registered as participants and not real sailors and this will turn out on the points to us. Here you have an error that must be treated in a different way of ranking.

Just a quick update for anyone interested in how this is panning out. It would seem that STI is happy to work with SOL (still some details to clarify but the prinicple is accepted!!) - the idea is to have a boat-type/polar for more than one class and SOL will race the Tall Ships races at the same time as they are being raced in reality.

SOL will, of course, be linking to the STI website and its tracker so that all info is available to SOLers and, hopefully, STI will also mention SOL somewhere!! :-D

Great news eh??!!

I like this :-)
It gets better!! STI are going to work on the polar/txt file for the SOL Barque to make three additional polars so SOL will be racing the four main classes of boat that are being raced in reality!! :-)

We are also optimistic that the company providing the trackers for the Tall Ships will be happy to liaise with SOL so we have at least one boat per class of the real fleet appearing on the SOL race screen.

This is all a little short notice for this year but we will all be doing our best to make it an excellent "first year" so that we buddy-up again with STI in the future!!!
UPDATE: we have three out of the five polars prepared by STI and tweaked by SOL's Polar Dudes and earlier today I set up the first race so that STI can log in and see how a race will look.

Everyone is very welcome also to have a sneak preview, as the sol boat.

So

Login as the SOL boat:

Username: sol
Password: sol

and then click here

The race will stay open for a few days!

For the SOL race there will be five boats to choose from:

Class A Large
Class A Small
Class B
Class C
Class D

Hereare definitions for these classes.

You can also find all the information about this year's races here.

:-D

Red Eye - Myth of Malham 2025

In 1947, Hugh McLean & Sons of Gourock, Scotland built a radical racing yacht for John Illingworth, soon-to-be Commodore of the RORC, to a design by Laurent Giles. With a masthead rig, giving her ‘free’ sail area per the rules of the time, and short overhangs reducing pitching, Myth of Malham went on to win The Fastnet that year and again in 1949, and to compete in numerous Admiral's Cups. In 1958, in honour of the yacht, the Myth of Malham race was conceived - a mini-Fastnet to the first lighthouse on a rock west of Cowes, Eddystone, rather than the second, to be held in non-Fastnet years. IRL this year it has been raced already, but this stops us not from “Red Eye” racing its online 230nm in Fareast 31Rs, leaving how to deal with the Isle of Wight open to your own discretion.

Africa by Sea 2025 - Maputo to Mogadishu

The fifth leg of our exploration of Africa By Sea takes us north along the length of the Continent’s succulent sub-tropical and tropical Indian Ocean coast. Much fought over by traders and colonists both well-before and after a Portuguese expedition under the command of Vasco da Gama first sailed there from Europe back in the 16th century, it is yet to be properly explored as a yachting destination. With plenty of islands off- and inshore, small and very large, there is much to interrupt your 1900nm voyage and visit in your Swan 65, from Maputo to Mogadishu! Race #1858
