Board » Practice Racing » Mark Boat Rounding Rules - Proposal for discussion

Page: Previous 1 2 3 4 Next

As to personal or fleet hop, I think the personal hop is to short a time.

Tom
I don't think so.
Assuming no one is missing Marks for cheating, he is turning one, at maximum two, personal Hops to early. So he taking at least one personal hop and the additional performance loss as penalty. At least, the penalty is bigger than his gain in every case. I think that's enough, as my goal is to compensate potential gains rather then punishing a fail in trying to round accurate.

Server hops are just a matter of display updates, they don't realy exist, neither in your client, nor on the server.
The only possibility of time measurement is the number of required turns, as each turn needs at least a personal Hop.
NO! KISS = Keep It Simple Simple.

If you miss a mark, then go back to the mark, unwind your error, and the pass the mark correctly.

Use the RRS test of having a string laid in your wake and then pulled taut to see if you have passed all the marks correctly.

The only other way would be to ckick on a "Penalty" button which is preprogrammed to do penalty turns, 360 or 720 degrees. Then you need to specify a Port or Starboard circle(s). => TOO HARD.
If it breaks, it's not strong enough!
What about RC rules for Practice Racing.

Missing a Mark: Like in real life, if you start from the Gun in a practice race and miss a mark then to get a final ranking in the race you must return to the mark and round it correctly. If you don't wish to do this you are welcome to continue to race but your ranking will drop to last.

So far I think Taz'z solution best, even if I think "one own ships hop" is a "wee bit to nice".
Oddly enough, I like my idea hehehe

As this is just for practice racing and not for SOL races I think, as has been said, we should keep it simple.

Folks aren't deliberately missing the Mark Boats so... I agree with Jawik lets do what I suggested at the top of this thread (for a while, at least, and then see how it plays out).

:-D
Tricky to say how much you miss the mark and if gain more missing mark and doing penalty turns.. I would say no mercy for people missing marks.. including me, sometimes my DC:s are too agressive
Taking a chance on lap all the way up the mast of the buoy (the boat) then one must also accept the consequences of our choices. Make it easy and keep your distance ...

Even if one starts before the time is right, one should return and start again ...

KISS> Keep it simple and stupid

Have noticed that some start at precisely at 19:00 when the shot has been fired. It takes at least one second before we hear the shot so the start should come after this blast. If not you have to return and do it again.

So why take the chance :-)

I did it once and it cost me when I did 4x90 turn :-( I am not in yet...
But I also see that these proposals can lead to bickering over whether a rounding mark, or a false start. Also when we pass the finish line, this leads to bickering about who was first. This has occurred and therefore I do not take the passage of the finishing line seriously. Here is the chance for unstable over who was ....

But as long as one can have fun, I'm still working on and racing

Proposed start.

One must stay inside the chat (SailTalk Only) and await for KABOOOOM from the gun, and then switch over to "Send Command" and press this.

Those who put the DC in advance have to ensure that they do not leave before the KABOOOOM.

Getting into the race minutes after the main start is wrong when the wind has already changed. And you don't have the pressure on you and still you are counted in the list. Cant be right...

If you start last you will be last ;-)

Current Races:

West Papua to Oregon 2026

Our next race in our Ocean Championships is the first of a series of great natural migrations we will track in 2026. The leatherback turtle is the most widely distributed marine reptile on planet Earth, and chooses to breed in warm tropical waters, but prefers to forage in more temperate habitats, travelling thousands and thousands of miles effortlessly annually to maintain this way of life. Our race will follow one of the typical trips of this turtle, from breeding grounds in the seas off West Papua to the coast of Oregon. It’s only 5900nm, so to keep up, but in comfort, we’ll follow in our Gunboat 90.

Race to Up Helly Aa 2026

A-OI!!! The fiery spirit of Shetland’s legendary Up Helly Aa returns, and Sailonline’s annual race to Lerwick is once again upon us. Covering 383 nautical miles from Aberdeen, SOLers will tackle winter waters steeped in Viking tradition. This year, we race the classic Frers 33, a proven cruiser-racer born from the golden era of offshore racing and still a sturdy performer both on the virtual and real water. Can you master the course and reach Lerwick in time for the flames?

SAILING NOTE: Gruney may be approached from any direction but must be passed for rounding purposes as indicated on the chart.

Red Eye - Hobart Convict Run 2026

Back in 2010, one of our SOLers of the first hour, AUS_Scott76, came up with this ‘Convict Run’ out from Hobart, past Cape Raoul and the penal colony of Port Arthur, round Tasman Island, up and back down the east coast of Tasmania, to finish with a tight technical run – so Scott called it – up the picturesque D'entrecasteaux Channel, home to Hobart once again. It’s 250nm, ideal for a bit of ‘Red Eye’ in comfortable Finngulf 43’s, and if the original idea was to pick up some convicts on the way for a bit of R&R and sea air, you may always drop’m back before returning to Hobart!

New Ice Age 2026 - Longyearbyen to Browerville

Although we have by no means exhausted the possibilities of ice boating on lakes at high latitudes or high altitudes, it was noticeable that as our 2025 Series progressed, there were calls from time to time for longer-distance challenges, and so in response to these calls we will pretend that global warming has reversed and as a result the coastal waters of Antarctica and Russia and Canada have fully (and smoothly!) frozen over offering us the possibility of a 4-race New Ice Age series in our trusted no-PL DN machines. Our first leg takes us 2600nm from Svalbard’s Longyearbyen east to North Alaska’s Browerville. You’ll be a few days on the ice, so dress warmly and take some provisions; go!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Robinson Crusoe to Galapagos

Welcome to our first race of a new series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones, this first race taking you north from south of the Tropic of Capricorn to the Equator-straddling Galapagos, home of magical iguanas and other exotic fauna (but no mythical kings, Dory) Departing from the island where in 1704 adventurer Alexander Selkirk inspired Daniel Defoe to write the best-seller "The Life and Adventures of Robinson Crusoe", by debarking off the unsound "HMS Cinque Ports", four months before she foundered off the coast of present-day Colombia, we will sail the 2200nm in our decidedly sounder and faster than the " Cinque Ports",
