OK!

don't worry - lots of folks post as sol but usually, like you, realise and then identify themselves :-D
Hi RC, please correct as First 40.7..on the polar it is stated as First 40.7 which is correct.

Second issue about the wps still waiting comments from my friends who designed the race. will expedite and let you know.
Ahmet - I have corrected the Homepage reference to the boat type. As a non-sailor I had thought that "First 40" was sufficient reference so, my apologies for not being precise!

I look forward to finding out if the race designers wish to make any changes to the course - personally, I rather like the way it is :-)
Thanks for the correction.

I also like it the way it is but I asked my friends to look at it again and comment so that we can finalize the course.

Wish you a very nice day.
Hi AC - one or two others who have looked at the race and are very keen to see it take place have also suggested that perhaps one or two of the waypoints could be made "either direction". This would not change the designed route very much but would open up the possibility for people to be a little creative.

The area does appear to have very changeable winds (particularly the Aegean) so a degree of discretion in choosing a route would make the race more of a challenge, and perhaps less of a "follow my leader"!

Please would you mention this to your friends (or just point them in the direction of this thread, of course!)?
i have sent my friends a revised version of the race removing all wps after samos till antalya thus allowing the boats to go anyway they choose around the islands south east of the Aegean...it is true that the winds in this part can change a lot making it challenging for sailors to choose their route between the islands.
Sounds like you guys are on the right track. Race design can be tricky. Balancing a desire to have boats follow a particular route, the aspects that make for good racing and SOL's peculiarities isn't easy!

I've been following this one with interest. It has the makings of a great (and slightly epic) race! The initial proposal had a few turns that conflicted with the way SOL calculates roundings (always goes around the "outside" of any angle) but was a good basis on which to build a race.

A handful of waypoints were added to force the fleet inshore at Lesvos, Samos and Antalya in keeping with the proposal.

I think AC505 has correctly identified the run following Samos as a bit of a bottleneck. Even without waypoints, it's likely that the fast line will be through th islands. Giving the fleet the choice makes for more interesting racing, and it also might allow some boats that need to set DC to take an offshore approach.

Many of the remaining waypoints don't actually change the race. They are there simply to make the in-race ranking work a little better and keep the course layout line close to the path sailed.

This race could very well be run with only the start and finish marks and it would be a fine course. It's going to be a tough one... 10-14 days and little chance to take a break :-)

Attached files I,II,III.

I is the current course
II removes the labyrinth after Samos and simplifies some of the non-essential waypoints.
III is a bare-bones all-options-open Sail around Turkey.

I've suggested removing the waypoint in the Sea of Marmara as well unless the sponsors are very attached to it. The last race we had around here had some very interesting splits in the fleet, with some following the European shore and the other half taking varying lines through the islands.

Should be fun no matter what! There's a good chance I'll be watching this one from Datça :-)

I thank Serge and 76 for their valuable comments. I have received the final OK for the course and I believe that it will make everybody happy (except maybe RC!).

We all hope that it will be an interesting race which will be publicized in Turkish boat magazines.

AND there are plans to make this a real life event next year. So the organizers might get some tips from this race!

and I wish 76 good time in Dalaman...but if you are also a windsurfer I suggest you go to Alacati one of the best place to surf.
Ahmet- fabulous thank you!! OK so it means I go back to the "drawing board" (or SOL setup).. but I will now try and make changes to match what is now happening!!

I may still need to include one/two additional waypoints just to stop the rhumbline going across too much land (which looks ugly)from one of your waypoints to the next. Your line is wiggly but SOL rhumbline only goes straight from one point to the next!!

I will try and do this tomorrow morning before the Ouzo Rally starts... then you can check it out in SOL over the weekend.

After this, the race will disappear from the SOL homepage to give precedence to current and upcoming races.

Don't forget to let us have a copy of the article in Naviga magazine!! :-)

Red Eye - Myth of Malham 2025

In 1947, Hugh McLean & Sons of Gourock, Scotland built a radical racing yacht for John Illingworth, soon-to-be Commodore of the RORC, to a design by Laurent Giles. With a masthead rig, giving her ‘free’ sail area per the rules of the time, and short overhangs reducing pitching, Myth of Malham went on to win The Fastnet that year and again in 1949, and to compete in numerous Admiral's Cups. In 1958, in honour of the yacht, the Myth of Malham race was conceived - a mini-Fastnet to the first lighthouse on a rock west of Cowes, Eddystone, rather than the second, to be held in non-Fastnet years. IRL this year it has been raced already, but this stops us not from “Red Eye” racing its online 230nm in Fareast 31Rs, leaving how to deal with the Isle of Wight open to your own discretion.

Africa by Sea 2025 - Maputo to Mogadishu

The fifth leg of our exploration of Africa By Sea takes us north along the length of the Continent’s succulent sub-tropical and tropical Indian Ocean coast. Much fought over by traders and colonists both well-before and after a Portuguese expedition under the command of Vasco da Gama first sailed there from Europe back in the 16th century, it is yet to be properly explored as a yachting destination. With plenty of islands off- and inshore, small and very large, there is much to interrupt your 1900nm voyage and visit in your Swan 65, from Maputo to Mogadishu! Race #1858
