Board » Practice Racing » Grey Whale Migration practice match racing

Post annotated by Incognito :
This thread was moved from the category Races.
We should get time for one good match race before the Start of the Grey Whale race.

All are welcome to take part!

This will begin near Guerrero Negro, at a time to be determined, (Thursday?) Proceed to 28.1n 114.2w.

Folks may want to have private mini-races to that location? A good part-way destination is the island at 26.7n 113.2w.

I will start for that island at 2400z if anyone wants to play. Then, tomorrow to Guerrero Negro.

news - I liked your suggestion in chat to make the run to Guerrero Negro in two parts:

But FIRST you need to get to the location for the matchracing at 28.1n 114.2w. The proposal from newsartist (and agreed) thus far is to make this journey in two legs:

1. go from the Start to the island at 26.7n 113.2w(San Ignacio).

2. Then go on 28.1n 114.2w (?Guerrero Negro).

Gives a chance for people to join up to cruise to the matchrace start together!
ALL ARE INVITED
There will be an informal casual practice matchrace on Thurday, 11 March for anyone who wants to join in.

Time: 1800utc
Start: Beach at 28.03N 114.19W where RC and gang are waiting.
Route: North to the "flat" point at 29.11N 114.71W - beach boat to finish, there will be BBQ later :-)

Suggested race for later is SW to the islands and back to today's start. Good reaching practice! If you can't make today's start, you could always meet the fleet on the Northern beach.

Six boats started under DCs at 1800utc and, sadly, it became apparent almost immediately that newsartist hadn't realised the final course posted did not include the Island of Natividad.

The six starters are:

76T (CAN)
News (USA)
Rainbow (GBR)
Smo (FIN)
Stoerte (AUSTRIA)
Tazu (GER)

By 1930utc the group of five heading to the first finish point were all very close together, news remained on course for Isla Natividad, and the rankings (based on dtg - distance to go- in nm) were:

1. Tazu 53.2nm
2. 76T 54.3nm
3. Smo 54.5nm
4. Rainbow 54.7nm
5. stoerte 55.3nm
6. newsartist 69.1nm

MATCHRACE DTG RANKINGS 2140utc

1. Smo AND Tazu 35.4nm
3. 76T 35.8nm
4. stoerte 35.9nm
5.Rainbow 37.1nm.

Sadly, newsartist has stopped racing for today.

MATCHRACE DTG RANKINGS 2300utc

1. Rainbow27.7nm
2. stoerte 28.2nm
3. Smo29.5nm

Thursday Match Race Results

p.1 Smo 0207 * tie for First*
p.1 Tazumaki 0207
p.3 76Trombones 0208
p.4 Stoertebaker 0209 **scored at line extension, sailed into bay**
p.5 RainbowChaser
p.6 newsartist

It was an 'interesting' Finish. Smo led Taz by a tiny margin nearing the line, but the updates were out of phase and Tazumaki 'flipped' first.

Call it a tie for First and Second. With 76Trombones right there for Third.

Complicating things, darkness fell five minutes before the Finish. RainbowChaser was 11.0nm out, and the touring newsartist was 52.7 away. (Bacchus is 36nm out and appears to be joining us.)

5. Rainbow 54.3nm

Sinbad by Balloon 2025 - Carnarvon to Dondra

From here, our home in Bharatavarṣa is now north west of us – said Sinbad to his fellow balloonists. Perhaps we can ride the wind first further north, and then catch the winds that every year bring the rain, perhaps not. It’s 2600nm and we could be aloft awhile, so, Master el-Quarters, victuals only, no sandbags, provisioning the giant hamper. It will be not a picnic!

Camel or Balloon 2025 - Khartoum to N'Djamena

As there is a lull in the calendar, your PRO has decided to risk an experiment – a balloon race over land, using a workaround to eliminate the recognition of water/land transitions. If it fails, the server may crash, and we abandon PDQ, hopefully after leg 7 of the ABS race to Suez has been decided, and before the start of the 1st OCC of Q4. Camel or Balloon – c 1000 nm from a field on the north bank of the Blue Nile at Khartoum to a field on the north bank of the Chari River at N'Djamena!
