I can understand your intention, but pls. bear in mind.

Even races longer then 1000Nm includes:
1. Turn around an island
2. Turn around a buoy/mark
3. Climbing up wind along a coast line
4. Tacking just infront of a competitor
5. Fight for the finish line etc.

In those cases I prefer to have as short update frequency as possible.
Which is pretty much what my suggestion is intended to achieve, just for the races that would benefit the most from it... So a 2600nm ocean race updates every 60 seconds - that leaves a lot more server power for shorter races to update say, every 7 seconds instead.

...and where are SOL heading?
"only necessary to login to the race once every 2 days..."

1. Why bother to compete if we don´t have to be at the helm or even log in?
I was talking about races taking upward of a month... (Global Challenge Leg 5 for example?) Perhaps 24 hrs would be better? But, those who are to be competitive will still put in the effort! And i didnt mean to imply that no-one would login for that period, just that it could be done and still be reasonably competitive: set DC for 24 hr may be easier for many than doing so every 6
2. I hope sailors arn´t in a meeting, in the car, on a businesstrip, in school, in bed when the 48h WX finally pops up... how will you avoid that?
SOL have sailors in a lot of time zones around the world.
There will always be sailors away from their PC´s when the WX pops up. Todays released time for WX are exellent.
If the wx is updated less frequently it will be less critical to be onto it early ?? As it is now, many SOLers skip 1 or 2 updates because they are at 3am or whatever...

I think and hope SOL will develope more in the IRL direction and not too much in the "remote/DC" sailing direction.
What exactly do you mean by this? DC is essential, but how can SOL develop more 'IRL direction' ?? Turkey was a good example... There were critical sections where I was up and at pc no matter what time, and so I could do this I needed to set DCs when I could, so i could get *some* sleep ;-)
So a mix of the 2 is always needed to do well... Actually i consider this sort of 'management of time' just as much a 'sol skill' as navigating.

Today is the SOL key a good mix of Coastal, Offshore and Ocean races to satisfy most of the SOL sailors. All sailors don´t HAVE to particepate in ALL races.

...or am I out and sailing? :))

But thx for the discussion - no one else seemed to, or else thought the ideas silly..
They were mostly ideas just thrown out there, and i said i had not really put thought into exact figures, just the principles of modifying update frequencies (boat and wx) depending on the race... This may not even be an auto-decided thing, but part of race setup - ie when setting up, the frequencies can be specified based on the course... If it is all ocean, then 60s boat updates and 12 or 24 hr wx is not gong to change the end result... And then the simultaneous Swedish coastal (or similarly huge amount of rocks!) race could have 10 (or less) second updates... Those regions have only 12 hourly wx anyway...
I help develop the client interface for the best online ocean racing sim there is... __/)/)_/)__
Please provide an example kmz and the procedure for how to create a race proposal. I've having a bit of trouble getting the details correct.
Scotsman - have you read the Proposals Manual attached to the first post in this thread? Together with the info I added to the post itself?

The Manual is very good at showing how to create GE files and adding the Race Description and invitation.

Otherwise all you need do is post your proposal in the Forum together with your finished kmz file :-)

Hope that helps!

I am now off to see how I can convert the pdf format of that Race Proposal Manual back to a ppt so I an amend it!!
Please find attached a proposal of a Mediterranean race

Hello SOLers, it would be nice to do this race in SOL ... : http://maserati.soldini.it/maserati-salpa-domani-per-la-transpac/?lang=en

FW all, see you.

Carlo Alberto
Newport to Bermuda Race

We have sailed this traditional race twice on SOL with the last one just finished.
I am sure it was a painful experience for the ones caught by the blue arrows, the so called Bermuda High.

For some it was a delightful race, but I am sure that for everyone it was an intrigue and demanding experience.

The real life Bermuda Race is sailed every two years, next on to be in 2016. Over the many years of existence, there was fast runs, very fast runs, slow runs and painful runs but always very interesting.

I would like respectfully ask the Sailonline Race Committee to consider including this race on our racing calendar, once every two years, always starting on the 3rd Friday of June.

Thank you very much,
Antonio (zero)
Dear all,

Race suggestions are of course welcomed from all members of the SailOnline community. However, it is a privilege only of those with SYC Membership to design and submit formal races.

To propose a new-to-SOL race, simply use this Guide and then post the resulting kmz file, together with a brief description of what you propose in a new thread in this Forum.

then

Once you have your Google Earth file, please start a thread in this Forum with the race name as its title so that SOLers can see your proposal.
