TT - this looks an excellent proposal!! Thank you. I think this will be SOL's first race in Estonian waters too!!
AND July 29th is a good date (did you check the calendar perhaps??) so thank you for that!! I will post a link back here once the race is set up in SOL so you can have a sneak preview of it |

Thinking in long races that we did in the past. Following long races (were a lot of fun) I think do not collude with real races:
San Francisco to Hawai (two or three years ago) South Chile to San Franciso (three years ago) Oklan to New Zeland or Tasmania Cape Town to England Miami to Rio |

Now that we have some "Tall Ship" polars, please keep in mind some of the Tea Clipper runs from China to New York, and China to London. Some of the most romantic seafaring voyages from the heydey of sail were run by Cutty Sark and Red Jacket and others around the Horn. Compared with modern sailing voyages, these were probably some of the most extreme voyages ever made.
Also New York to San Francisco---one of my mother's uncles was in S.F. at the time of the earthquake, as crew or as junior officer aboard a clipper. --- Last Edited by Rod at 2011-07-13 03:15:21 --- If it breaks, it's not strong enough--if it doesn't, it's too heavy. |

We have a pretty decent Clipper polar (quite a bit faster!). The IRL record for NY-SF is 89days... I'm all for it, but we'd realistically have to leave the race open until Christmas.
We've talked about options that might allow "background" races without huge server loads. Reducing update cycles to several minutes rather than 15 seconds is about the only way that something of this scale could be run without disrupting everything else. Are we keen enough to sustain interest over that long a race? NY_SF 89d "Tea race" 102d Plymouth-Sydney ~75d |

I, for one, would love to do something like this...
As for server update times, to maximise flexibility I don't see any reason why there couldn't be a different update frequency for differing lengths?? For example (only - I haven't really thought hard on this): <500nm = 15s (like now) 500-1000 = 30s 1000-2500 = 60s 2500+ = 120s I really don't see that a race taking even 2 weeks requires (or would even really benefit from?) 15 second updates... With something like this in place it may even be possible to increase the frequency for short (<50nm?) races to perhaps 10 seconds? Although the client needs to be 'in sync' - ie no point in client requesting updated boat info every 15 seconds (or 45s for fleet) if nothing changes for 60+ seconds... But that isn't really a problem once something is decided on... Edit: Also reducing wx updates for very long voyages, even to only once per 48 hours may also help attract more competitors ?? That way it is really only necessary to login to the race once every 2 days... --- Last Edited by Aaron Gage at 2011-07-18 08:01:09 --- I help develop the client interface for the best online ocean racing sim there is... __/)/)_/)__ |

Hi Aaron!
I can understand your intention, but pls. bear in mind. Even races longer then 1000Nm includes: 1. Turn around an island 2. Turn around a buoy/mark 3. Climbing up wind along a coast line 4. Tacking just infront of a competitor 5. Fight for the finish line etc. In those cases I prefer to have as short update frequency as possible. ...and where are SOL heading? "only necessary to login to the race once every 2 days..." 1. Why bother to compete if we don´t have to be at the helm or even log in? 2. I hope sailors arn´t in a meeting, in the car, on a businesstrip, in school, in bed when the 48h WX finally pops up... how will you avoid that? SOL have sailors in a lot of time zones around the world. There will always be sailors away from their PC´s when the WX pops up. Todays released time for WX are exellent. I think and hope SOL will develope more in the IRL direction and not too much in the "remote/DC" sailing direction. Today is the SOL key a good mix of Coastal, Offshore and Ocean races to satisfy most of the SOL sailors. All sailors don´t HAVE to particepate in ALL races. ...or am I out and sailing? ) --- Last Edited by PerEric Horn at 2011-07-18 21:47:00 --- --- Last Edited by PerEric Horn at 2011-07-18 21:50:12 --- --- Last Edited by PerEric Horn at 2011-07-18 21:51:03 --- |

Hi - an idea for a race in the Western Approaches of England using the main fishing ports and grounds as waypoints. The Fishermans Friend!
Sorry, waypoints appear twice! Cant edit upload but I'm sure you can! --- Last Edited by Chipspitter at 2011-08-05 01:36:14 --- |

Thumbs up from me for Fishermans Friend or should that be Fiend??
Home territory for a number of us and I know why Chipspitter has chosen these ports and the interesting title. Cheers Ketch |

Chipspitter - here you go! I think I have got your course set up correctly... I added in Eddystone on the way back to Plymouth (a) it featured in the kmz file you provided and (b) it makes the finish line properly accessible (the finish line is automatically created perpendicular to the sailing line).
To preview your race, just log in as sol: Username: sol Password: sol and then click here I will leave the preview open for a couple of days so do sing out if you want some chnages made! |

Kapiti Chetwodes Race 2024
For only the second time in SOL history, we have the pleasure of inviting you to the Kapiti Chetwodes Race, held in the Cook Strait region. Organised IRL by the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club from Wellington in New Zealand. The approximately 160nm long route, full of turning points, will take us from the bay at RPNYC around the islands of Somes, Kapiti and Chetwodes and back to the finish line at RPNYC. We have only a 26 ft Albin 79 yacht at our disposal. All this means that we will have a lot of fun, so fair winds!
