  • Regarding "Seat Of The Pants" (SOTP)
    Board » General Discussion
My HATS OFF to the organizers of Golden Globe Race, starting 1 July 2018 - and to test this "no-grib-routers please"-RULE! It is GREAT!
Since I am an bit oldfashioned, as my kids say.., I always sail only "visually", without grib-router software. It is ok. Still, in a normal race, one needs to be aware, that one sailes against machines (sol:ers tuning their grib-routers). To see how good one can get, against machines. And still be ok with that.

(Unfortunately I might miss first leg of this race, because I will be out sailing for real.)
  • Notice time for ocean type races
    Board » General Discussion
    Hi,
I am still AMAZED by the short notice time used for especially ocean type races. For how many days was the notice for ongoing Leg 3 Australia New Zealand race out? We now see many late starters, in this race Leg, and less than usual # of participants. What is the problem of announcing a long race e.g. 1 month ahead??? It seems that only relevant and only wanted customers are the real addicts and login-every-day sailonline users.
    Cheers,
    Mange
  • notices of race
    Board » General Discussion
    Hi!
I think it is unfortunate the the "notice of race" period is so short, for a big race like Global Challenge. I am not too much of an sailonline addict, I did not race much during last year. But during past months I did check website now and then if an ocean race was coming up. Then I was for travel for a week, busy with other things. Just to find later I was 4 days late for this start! What happened? (Look now at for exampel rumskib also.) Why not notice this type of race for a month at least? A large fleet I guess all want, no? Best regards! Mange

Current Races:

Tobruk to Iskenderun 2026

Welcome to the fourth of our nine races across the length and breadth of the Magical Mediterranean Sea, and the second that is not in partnership with a real-life event, this time for good reason, which we won’t get into here. From Tobruk to Iskenderun it’s 670nm in length, with the added complication that the island of Cyprus will be in your way. Hoping, possibly forlornly, for plenty of downwind sailing, we’ll take the Lagoon 55 for the voyage!

Tasmania to Kamchatka 2026

Welcome to yet another all-new route. Tasmania to Kamchatka, part of our Ocean Championship and also the third leg of the ROW (Round the Old World) series. Be aware of the obstacles on the way, likely to split the fleet. It's like X:mas to X:mas, crossing the same waters, navigating the same archipelagos. This second race of OCQ2 2026 will be sailed in our revised 'version 2' Imoca 60 Foil. Race #2031
