Board » General Discussion » 2013 Fastnet Race - SoL IRL Entry?

Hi all.

Gilles and myself have been talking about entering a yacht in the 2013 Fastnet Race (known on SoL as the “Lighthouse to the south of Ireland race”.

http://fastnet.rorc.org/

The idea is to put together a crew made up entirely of SoL members.

Obviously, this will be a massive undertaking, involving a lot of time, effort, and finance, for which the reward will be the participation in one of the world’s greatest ocean races.

The current plan is to charter a boat, perhaps 40’, which will require a crew of 9/10.

What we are looking for right now is a list of people who might be interested, and what their level of experience/expertise is, so that we can get an idea of whether the idea will float (in a manner of speaking).

So, over to you!
What an exciting and ambitious idea!
I'd like to throw my hat in the ring. Do you want applications, experience etc on the thread here or sent to you by email ?
Let's do it by email

please feel free to send us an e-mail:
gil_in_bremen@yahoo.de, better both of us for the moment.
We are just the promotor of the idea ATM, will see what will happen!
Good wind!

Hopefully we can meet up in the Hamble in a couple of weeks time as planned. I have some ideas.

I guess you have read the pre-requisites by now which include qualifying miles and certain training requirements for crew members.

At 4.0N 108.2E lies the island of Natuna Besar, Great Natuna, surrounded by at least 154 islands, of which 127 uninhabited, Indonesia’s Natuna Regency, and all around this archipelago, the Natuna Sea, bordered by Borneo to the east, the Java Sea to the south, and the Malay peninsula to the west, and extending north to cross a disputed international border with China into the South China Sea. And it’s a border that matters, there’s gas here! But why worry, let’s race – 2050nm in our goo’ol’ Open 60s in between the production platforms, prowling destroyers and submarines.
