Yesterday at 13:00 UTC my distance to go was 11.860 miles. Today at 07:30 I have 12.252 miles although I kept sailing the same direction. How can this be possible?
A similar question has been replied to by Jakob here: http://www.sailonline.org/board/thread/1664/?page=1#post-1664

Also, at http://team-yacht-treff.de/pub/ranking-125.html you'll find a ranking for leg 5, courtesy of Brainaid. He may be using a different method of calculation.

I am afraid this doesn't reply my question. Distance to the leader can vary due to the several reasons. My questions is to the increasing distance to finish line, although I am sailing in the same direction.
Do not worry, dtg will make more sense as we approach the Horn :-)

I am sure it's true:) But, I still belive there is a serious calculation mistake done by the system which leads some part of the fleet to go to the wrong direction.
1) I do not think there is any mistake done in the dtg-calcs. Maybe you would choose another algorithm but I developed a scheme that works pretty good in most cases. It is very difficult to come up with a algorithm that in all cases coincide with everyones intuitive sense of what is right. First I cal the dist to rounding, then dist from that to finish. When we are soooo darn far from rounding and the pole is involved, the point of rounding is moving around. Take a globe and play around with it and you will see what I mean. The calcs are ok, but the concept of dtg is ambigous at the moment. Be cool and things will start to make sense as we come closer to cape.

2) If people are mislead by the dtg-calcs when 12000nm from goal through doldrums, etc I cannot be blamed. A look at Google-earth or a globe often does wonders for the understanding.

Thanks for the reply. My understandings :
1- in 24 hours being located 380 miles behind a day before position is normal. No matter you sail continuously the same direction to the finish line.
2- Better to use other tools rather than the information to be provided by the system.
Adnan, when you say sailing in same direction do you mean you are sailing the great circle route as shown by the ruler, and you are sticking to that course?

If so then the dtg should become shorter, but if you are sailing slightly off the great circle your dtg could get longer. I'm no expert though. :-)
That's my point. I am sailing to nearly the same direction. Visually I am forwarding down on my course, but dtg is still 370 miles longer than my yesterday's distance.
Trust me, dtg will make more sense as we approach the Horn.
