Reports

Commentary
Sailonline’s Race Committee divided the summer season of tall ships racing into two separate series, each sailing a different polar. Series 1, racing our awesome Clipper, took place in European waters. Series 2 was our first foray into racing a tall ship, this time our Class B tall ship, in the waters of the China Sea. The series comprised two races, from Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City to Pulau Natuna Besar in the Riau Islands and then, after a pause to revittle and take on fresh water, onward from the Riau Islands to the Straits of Singapore.

Despite mostly windward conditions, the polar of our Class B Schooner created an interesting event for us and could perhaps be used more often in the future – for “speedsters” who would rather we were racing foiling cats, it might have been a bit of a snooze, but for those who recognise the historical significance of tall ships and how all sailing experience synthesises in modern boat design to produce awesome new vessels, such as the Eco clippers and, of course, the flying catamarans of the America’s Cup, it was an interesting exercise!

This series concludes Sailonline’s Tall Ships Series for 2020, it is not the end of racing tall ships as we will shortly be racing our Clipper again in the Caribbean, and our worthy series winners are to be congratulated for their consistent performance. Very well done, guys!

Tobruk to Iskenderun 2026

Welcome to the fourth of our nine races across the length and breadth of the Magical Mediterranean Sea, and the second that is not in partnership with a real-life event, this time for good reason, which we won’t get into here. From Tobruk to Iskenderun it’s 670nm in length, with the added complication that the island of Cyprus will be in your way. Hoping, possibly forlornly, for plenty of downwind sailing, we’ll take the Lagoon 55 for the voyage!

Tasmania to Kamchatka 2026

Welcome to yet another all-new route. Tasmania to Kamchatka, part of our Ocean Championship and also the third leg of the ROW (Round the Old World) series. Be aware of the obstacles on the way, likely to split the fleet. It's like X:mas to X:mas, crossing the same waters, navigating the same archipelagos. This second race of OCQ2 2026 will be sailed in our revised 'version 2' Imoca 60 Foil. Race #2031
