28 September 2020

Sailonline is pleased to announce that it is partnering with ASTO to bring ASTO Virtual Small Ships Racing to armchair sailors and tall ships aficionados around the world. We are encouraging real UK Sail Training skippers who can’t be on the water to take part too!

ASTO - The Association of Sail Training Organisations - is the UK's National Sail Training Organisation with a membership made up of more than 30 not-for-profit organisations that operate more than 50 Sail Training vessels around the UK. Their mission is to support Sail Training for personal development, which it achieves in many ways, from awarding grants and running SSRs (Small Ships Races) to working closely with national and international sail training bodies to develop, promote and ensure best practice and safety standards in Sail Training.

Restrictions imposed on everyone during the #COVID19 pandemic means that getting out on the water for any purpose is very difficult and in some cases impossible, but with Sailonline’s virtual wind navigation simulator, you can hone your wind nav skills from anywhere on your laptop, tablet or smartphone! The real Small Ships Race, which takes place at exactly the same time around a similar course, only has 4 entries this year.

For the first virtual SSR, Sailonline will be using it’s Class B tall ship polar, based on a gaff-rigged schooner. The course, designed by ASTO, will, subject to winds, be a tricky one in the waters of The Solent, off England’s south coast. Everyone is welcome to race, there is nothing to pay, and in-race you will find there is always someone willing to answer questions in the online race chat. Sailonline’s race will open for practice at 1000utc on Tuesday, 28 September 2020 and will start at 1000utc on Saturday, 3 October 2020.

Christmas to Christmas Island 2025

Two waypoints, start and finish, and between them 5827 NM of two oceans. Not much time if we want to sit at the Christmas Eve table. You will need to maintain an average speed of over 10 knots, maybe quite possible with this Maxi Trimaran, but prepare your vessel well and choose the best of the many possible routes. Hands up everyone who knew there were TWO Christmas Islands?! OK, maybe you have sailed this Sailonline course before... but it's time to get ready for the 2025 challenge of racing between Christmas Island in the Pacific to Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean! It also marks the conclusion of our prestigious Ocean Race Championship 2025. Please have fun! Fair winds!

Andaman Islands PYOC 2025

The Andaman Islands are an archipelago, made up of 200 islands, in the northeastern Indian Ocean. Together with the Nicobar Islands to their south, the Andamans serve as a maritime boundary between the Bay of Bengal to the west and the Andaman Sea to the east. These waters will be the theater of our next 240nm race in the ARCH 2025 series. Which one you choose depends only on you, i.e. your Elan 410 sport will leave the Andaman Islands on the starboard or port side.

Sinbad by Balloon 2025 - Carnarvon to Dondra

From here, our home in Bharatavarṣa is now north west of us – said Sinbad to his fellow balloonists. Perhaps we can ride the wind first further north, and then catch the winds that every year bring the rain, perhaps not. It’s 2600nm and we could be aloft awhile, so, Master el-Quarters, victuals only, no sandbags, provisioning the giant hamper. It will be not a picnic!
