29 February 2020

Sailonline is delighted to announce that we will again be partnering with the prestigious San Diego Yacht Club (SDYC) for the biennial running of their San Diego to Puerto Vallarta Race. SDYC has been racing in the waters off San Diego for 130yrs, and in 2016, was the first USA West Coast yacht club to bring virtual sailing navigation to its members and the west coast sailing community when the club invited Sailonline to simulate the SoCal300 race online.

Originally created in 1953 by SDYC Commodore Ken Baker as a race to Acapulco in partnership with the Club de Yates de Acapulco, to lure American yachtsmen to tarry longer in the incredibly scenic cruising waters and ports of the emerging Mexican Rivera between Acapulco and Cabo San Lucas, in 1976 the race was shortened from c 1300 miles to c 1000 miles, becoming the race it is today. That same year, the Club de Yates de Acapulco took the initiative to organize a regional weeklong event of day racing for their American visitors and the yachts of the local fleets along the Mexican Riviera. The Mexican Ocean Racing Circuit, or MEXORC as it has become known, has since flourished. It is the crown jewel of Mexican regattas and continues to be a huge draw for participants in the race to Puerto Vallarta.

Sailonline will be going head to head with the real fleet – it is intended to bring the tracks of the real racers on-screen – and as we are racing our Volvo 70 polar, we will be competing against 'Pyewacket 70' in the ORR Class 1 Fleet. This will be the final group to start so we will have to chase down the rest of the race fleet on the way to Puerto Vallarta.

Sailonline's race opens for pre-race practice on Tuesday, March 3 at 20:00utc.

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Tenerife to Fernando de Noronha

The sixth race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us back up the Atlantic to Tenerife, from whence we will depart on a classic transatlantic passage to Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha. It’s 2150nm as the albatross flies, but you will undoubtedly have to take some and sometimes sudden detours to get your Volvo 70v4 through the doldrums stretching across your path from the Amazon to the Niger.
