Commentary
The second of our two Tall Ships races in the China Sea changed from an anticipated “run” from the Riau group of islands to the Strait of Singapore into something of a marathon. The China Sea is always an interesting body of water to sail in with winds and weather a blend of maritime and continental effects and at a time like the present, with the globe itself experiencing significant climate change, the classic almost-predictable winds are no more. It is always a matter of sailing what you find and hoping that forecast reliability is reasonable but even forecasts now are less sure!

The fleet departed Pulau Natuna Besar and within 24hrs had spread into a delightful fan-shape – with some tacking close(r) to the sailing line while others ranged to the fullest extent of the windward performance possible! A Tall Ship polar is a tricky thing to manage and, as is often said, the way that historical seafarers and traders coped with the difficulties posed by square-rigger performance remains astonishing!

Our podium three much be congratulated for their success – a review of the leaderboard shows that it was a tough race with it taking 15mins for the first 10 boats to arrive – so a tough race for all. Bravo!

New Ice Age 2026 - Scott Base to Neumayer Station

To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Tenerife to Fernando de Noronha

The sixth race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us back up the Atlantic to Tenerife, from whence we will depart on a classic transatlantic passage to Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha. It’s 2150nm as the albatross flies, but you will undoubtedly have to take some and sometimes sudden detours to get your Volvo 70v4 through the doldrums stretching across your path from the Amazon to the Niger.
