Lake Ontario Offshore Racing 2024

Sailonline is delighted to once again have the honour of partnering Lake Ontario Offshore Racing (LOOR), in offering virtual sailors the opportunity to compete in two of their popular annual Lake Ontario races. LOOR, like Sailonline, is a not-for-profit organisation, and is run by volunteers drawn from several yacht clubs around Lake Ontario with the aim of delivering the best races throughout the sailing season while also complying with the Clean Regatta rules of Sailors for the Sea.

As is becoming a tradition, Sailonline’s yacht of choice will be a Beneteau First 36.7 for both races of the virtual mini-series:

(1) Susan Hood Trophy Race (Friday, May 31): An overnight fully-crewed 75nm circuit around the west end of Lake Ontario. Run annually every year since 1955 (except 2020, of course) the race is affectionately referred to as ’the coolest race on the lake’ and offers a brisk opening to the race season in Ontario.
(2) Lake Ontario 300 Challenge (Saturday, July 13): A 300nm figure-eight circumnavigation of Lake Ontario. Since 1990, the LO300 has been a main event for offshore racing on the Great Lakes. As probably the longest freshwater race in the world, the course reaches the Niagara River, the gateway to the St.Lawrence Seaway at Main Duck Island in the Thousand Islands, and makes a customs-free visit to the American shoreline of Lake Ontario in New York State.

Both virtual versions of these real races will open several days before race start to allow practice on-course, and entries are free-of-charge, so be sure to start practicing early and to tell your fellow LOOR members, friends and family, as soon as each race opens!

A small but ultra-competitive fleet of 66 very racy Carkeek 40 yachts turned up for our annual Stockholm archipelago birthday bash from Revengegrundet Light to Jakob's mooring at Baggensfjärden.

Just how competitive it all was can be savoured from the reports by two of our podium-placers under the Stockholm arms inspired buttons above. And it was seats-of-the-pants that won the day, with perhaps our greatest SOPer, the SMOster, and brave brellis as well of course showing (and telling) us just how it is done!

Round the Horn(e) was a terrific comedic radio show in the UK in the mid 60s, but in 2024 it was not a quick way to sailonline from the Bay of San Sebastian on the north western shore of Tiera del Fuego to Nelson's Strait in the southern reaches of the Chilean Archipelago. Nevertheless, many a SOLer, not into the peculiar (like the radio show) fun and humour of taking a Class B Tall Ship through the narrows of the Straits of Magellan, gave it a go. And there was wisdom in this, as many another SOLer who ventured into the straits ended up running aground for indeterminate periods, when perhaps they were asleep, or simply distracted by things other than SOL, challenging their sense of humour.

However, there was one, and perhaps only one, SOLer, who it looks like transited the straits without mishap, or at least so it would appear, as WRmirekd made it to the finish a solid hour and a half before his nearest pursuer. Simply awesome!

The “Tyrrhenian Tour 2024” was the closing race of the ARQ1 classification. Not all contenders were lucky. Only 81 yachts finished the race. What was disappointing was the small and relatively weak participation of the Italian team in their home waters. Their honour was saved only by ITA210, which ultimately took 5th place.

French skippers Rick1_95, whose report you can read, and ALP317 had an excellent performance, taking 2nd and 3rd place respectively. We are particularly pleased with the excellent place of ALP317, who joined us only in January this year. Our current leader WRmirekd, did not disappoint either, winning the race and the first quarter classification.

Unfortunately, there was also a failure of our server, which was fortunately repaired quickly by the technical team. We would like to thank everyone for their involvement and congratulate the winners.

Melbourne to Osaka Prelude 2024

Welcome once again to what these days is Sailonline’s almost annual virtual Melbourne to Osaka Yacht Race. In real life, this double-handed 5500 nm race between these two sister cities, one deep in the southern hemisphere, the other high in the northern hemisphere, is run every four to five years, and is planned to be held again in 2025, so this race is a Prelude in partnership with the Melbourne Osaka Cup 2025 organising committee collaborating with the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria (ORCV), and the Sandringham (SYC) and Osaka Hokko (OHYC) yacht clubs. On this occasion, we’ll be racing the well-known First 40, a popular size of boat for a long-distance double-handed race. With the doldrums unavoidably lying across the track, you can expect to be at virtual sea for at least a month!
