    Hi Francois,

    Here it is the updated "kmz" file with your comments.
    I really don't know if they still do this race in RL. This was 20+ years ago when I still lived overthere.
    We used to sail on 1/2tonners and OneTonners. It was a 3 days affair.
    Here on SOL we could do (I think) in less than 48hours on a VO70. Maybe even less if we get good winds.
    Also, the real race didn't allow to go thru the Ilhabela strait, but for SOL this would more interesting.
    Note that in the leg from Rio to Buzios there are many little island that here on SOL we will be able to cut corners and again make the race more interesting.
    The idea here is to re-live my childhood.
    I hope we all have fun.
    It will all depend on the wind. If we get a weekend with light winds this could turn into a painful race. But, we sailors know that already. Don't we ?

    Proposal for a race outside of Rio (Brazil)

    This is my humble proposal for a race offshore of Rio de Janeiro.
    The circuit is based on an actual race that I sailed a few times.
    There are some modifications to make more exciting for Sol.
    I designed the race in Google Earth as per Francois (Incognito) tutorial. This is my first time working in Google Earth, so please review it as necessary.

    A few observations on my first anniversary of SOL.

    I’ve made good online friends here. (Thanks to the Chat Room) – Great feature.

    I’ve learned a great deal of sailing navigation and geography.
    The reason for me learning so much is in first place the design of the game, the polars, the wind arrows and the weather slide. But also the ability to see every other boat and their tracks.

    To me SOL is not a game but a learning tool, a sailing simulation. I bet we are all winners here. I have a feeling that anyone who dedicates time to SOL will became better tacticians in real life.

    I have no problem in seeing people using router software to get there faster. I certainly would if I had the time and the skills to write software. At the moment I learn by observation. Please, do not hide the tracks and the other boats. Hide the boats and tracks would diminish the learning tool aspect of SOL.

    I’ve been thinking about the software use or not use for the past months and my conclusion is to stagger very short races with long races. I don’t think outside router software is effective in short races specially the ones with lots of islands and SLI. (Don’t you like those? :)

    So, having a mix of short and long races we are going to satisfy both camps, software users and non-users, if that is at all possible.

    Either way, please do not let SOL turn into another video game where luck is a bigger factor.

    The BBQ race was great.
    I really enjoy these very short races.
    The level of competition we have here on Sol is so good and intense that if you blink you will loose positions.
    I am not saying we need this all the time, but to have these type of intense races sometimes, it is like an Aerobic exercise for your brain, it must be good for your health ;)

    Lots of Zig-Zags downwind and the race never turn into a parade.
    I really like those type of races.

    Nice to have a mix of Long and Short races here on Sol.

    In my opinion we don't need to race different races all the time.
    I personally would be happy to repeat past races sometimes.
    We have raced some wonderful short races here in the past that you could re-schedule again.
    For example, all the short "in-port" races during the VOR would be great to do again. (In my opinion)
    The races around the Sweden Archipelago were also super fun.

    Hi Jakob and all,

    Would be possible to run a few short, day races. Say, max 24 to 36 hours during the weekends.

    Also, it would be fun to use "Rambler" again, since last time we used we had to cancel the race.

    These latest long races have being hard to concentrate for a wage slave working man like some of us.

    Isn't this strange.
    Now I can see the maps and everything on these 2 new races (Chicago-Mackinac race) and (St.Malo race).
    Also no problems on the OSTAR.
    But, for whatever reason my Laptop refused to show the maps/weather/boats on the Gotland race :(

    Just for curiosity, how is it possible that the feed from one race only was not accepted by my computer?

    Update:

    I went back to OSTAR and it worked fine, but the Gotland race still does not work.

    Would it be possible that the "feed" from a particular race doesn't work ?
    Although it does not explain why it works for everyone else and my other computer.

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Samoa to Hawaii


The second race of our new series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones, takes us northward again up the Pacific Ocean, now from Samoa at 13.5 degrees South, across the Equator to Hawaii, famed for its breaking surf and active volcanoes, on the edge of the Tropic of Cancer at 19.5 degrees North. Beketov by Balloon 2026 - In Siberia


Way-back-when France and England, and Spain as well, were squabbling about who should control what of North America, only to lose the most of it to their own insurging colonists, their eastern European neighbour empire, Russia, was quietly assimilating vast, thinly nomadically populated territory of its own – Siberia! Amongst the many explorers and adventurers that served Russia so well in these conquests was the Cossack hetman Pyotr Beketov. Let’s pretend we’re he and eschewing horseback, let’s travel by balloon from Yekaterinberg to Krasnoyarsk – just a short 2000km (1100nm) section of the Trans-Siberian Express’ 9289km!

West Papua to Oregon 2026

Our next race in our Ocean Championships is the first of a series of great natural migrations we will track in 2026. The leatherback turtle is the most widely distributed marine reptile on planet Earth, and chooses to breed in warm tropical waters, but prefers to forage in more temperate habitats, travelling thousands and thousands of miles effortlessly annually to maintain this way of life. Our race will follow one of the typical trips of this turtle, from breeding grounds in the seas off West Papua to the coast of Oregon. It’s only 5900nm, so to keep up, but in comfort, we’ll follow in our Gunboat 90.
