Like restless oceans I cannot sleep
'tho I lay in my bunk and count some sheep
For my mind wanders far across the deep
Through wind and rain to the storm tossed fleet
And there the lonely vigil I keep
Pacing the deck on my aching feet
And I trust unto God that he will keep
Me safely from that bbq beach!

  • Just a couple of questions..
    Board » Technical Support
Sorry if these seem obvious to most people but I haven't been able to work it out

    1) Can I save a boat list within a race so that if I leave that race or log out of my computer, and later come back to it my boat list is still available to me?

    2) Brainaids toolbox, I've heard a lot about it, I've taken a look at it, where can I go to read exactly what it can do to help me and how I use it?

    3) How do I search the forum for old threads/posts that might help me answer the above questions and more?

Thanks in advance for your help

    Rich

I'm sure by now we have all heard the terrible news from Norway. It's hard to imagine something like that happening anywhere, least of all such a peace loving nation.

When I fell asleep the news was reporting 8 people dead, by the time I awoke just a few hours later I was shocked to discover that figure had risen to 95 confirmed dead between the two incidents.

As a new member of SOL I don't know whether it is too off topic or within the ethos of this great gathering of like minded people from around the world, but among our members are many Norwegians, great characters and sailors all, and I can only begin to imagine the shock with which they are watching these events unfold in their own media.

Perish the thought that they have friends or family involved in this tragedy.

So if the Sol gods agree it's appropriate, a small message of solidarity, from us, to all who proudly fly the Norwegian flag, here and beyond.

    Our thoughts are with you.

Beautifully summed up by Rainbow Chaser, and I do believe the original question has now been answered - see thread title - maybe now's the time to let this thread die, agree that those with the strongest feelings will probably never quite see eye to eye on this subject, and just enjoy the sailing.

Now, has my tall ship hit the rocks or not... better go and see.

Hi new to the site, in my first race and having a whale of a time. Had no idea such a thing as sail online existed and only wish I had discovered it ages ago. Still so much to learn!

Now this whole cheating, unfair, acceptable thread has probably rightly run out of steam and I'm loath to stoke it all up again but looking at it through the eyes of a (SOL) innocent I thought it might be worth throwing in my quick observation, because to my mind it doesn't really seem complicated at all....

one boat per person, or gang up with some friends and share a boat, but whether as an individual or a team you can only have one entry in a race.

If you've given your password to someone, then you have given them permission to control your boat - end of. So in the initial situation they by default had a boat sharing agreement.

My first race I was concentrating on doing better than the boats closest to me. Just by watching their names on the screen, by constantly checking their track, knowing we were in the same wind, I did develop an infinity with them even though I had not even chatted with them. A bit like real life, Open Ocean, humanity joined together albeit on separate craft, in an adverse environment. So I surprised myself how concerned I felt when I noticed one of the boats near me against whom I was in a direct race, fail to change course and beach. If I could have woken him up and alerted him to the danger I would have done, not just sailed past. If I had access to his password would I have changed his course without a baby sitting agreement specific to this race? No. But if someone else in the same situation felt it was appropriate to do that then it's not for me to criticise them.

I like the idea of doing it on my own. I think it's great that people develop teams and I'd be honoured if one day I was good enough to be invited to join one, but that does seem to be a very different concept from taking it upon yourself to alter someones course without their permission, when potentially someone else in the same position elsewhere on the course, playing in good faith but without the contacts, is left to go on the rocks.

The overall conclusion I'm left with is shit happens! These sort of things have to be left to the individuals conscience. We all do things spur of the moment to help out friends, we might not do it again with hind sight, and if some of us do it all the time well then that wouldn't seem to be in the spirit of the game, but above all don't get sucked into the reactionary rule making route! If SOL has worked for this long as it is, and is clearly this well loved by the people that take part, don't go down the route of making rule after rule after rule because it will get complicated and all the fun will definitely then be driven out of the game.

Blimey - I thought this was only going to be a quick post!!

Happy sailing all.. can't wait to keep learning from all of you

Beketov by Balloon 2026 - In Siberia

Way-back-when France and England, and Spain as well, were squabbling about who should control what of North America, only to lose the most of it to their own insurging colonists, their eastern European neighbour empire, Russia, was quietly assimilating vast, thinly nomadically populated territory of its own – Siberia! Amongst the many explorers and adventurers that served Russia so well in these conquests was the Cossack hetman Pyotr Beketov. Let’s pretend we’re he and eschewing horseback, let’s travel by balloon from Yekaterinberg to Krasnoyarsk – just a short 2000km (1100nm) section of the Trans-Siberian Express’ 9289km!

West Papua to Oregon 2026

Our next race in our Ocean Championships is the first of a series of great natural migrations we will track in 2026. The leatherback turtle is the most widely distributed marine reptile on planet Earth, and chooses to breed in warm tropical waters, but prefers to forage in more temperate habitats, travelling thousands and thousands of miles effortlessly annually to maintain this way of life. Our race will follow one of the typical trips of this turtle, from breeding grounds in the seas off West Papua to the coast of Oregon. It’s only 5900nm, so to keep up, but in comfort, we’ll follow in our Gunboat 90.
