  • Long time SOLer, Little Surprise
    Board » In memoriam
I rarely look at forum posts or even chats during the races anymore. But when I saw that Rob (Tyger) had passed, I decided to inform our SOL community that my brother, Dale (Little Surprise), is gone. He died on January 16th, a month shy of 80 yrs old, after a long battle with prostate cancer.

Not many will remember Little Surprise because Dale never posted on chat and was very rarely competitive, always sailing SOTP. But he loved SOL and participated in almost every race for many years. He joined in 2009, a few months before me, after Joanne's (Rainbow Chaser) urging. Love and peace, big bro.

If I remember correctly, in about 2013, shortly after Rob joined SOL, he became an active participant and helped us design and choose races - especially with real active 'buddy-up' races around the world. It takes a lot of time and passion to contact and sell the idea of partnering SOL with different sailing clubs -- all for the benefit of making the experience much better for all of us.

One time when he heard I was headed to Australia, Rob researched and recommended a company in Airlie Beach to charter a boat for sailing in the Whitsundays. It worked out perfectly and I was truly grateful for his help.

    Sad news, indeed.
IF my memory cells are correct (a big if these days), Rod commented in chat various times regarding some of his experiences in the Navy sailing the waters of the inside passage between Vancouver Island and the mainland. My experiences in those waters, along with circumnavigating the island, are some of my favorite sailing memories. Also, I think of Rod when passing by the local club racing their remote control boats during my neighborhood walks. He participated in many SOL races and seemed to be a constant presence near my fastpassage39. I will miss that.

Thank you, Joanne, for letting us know. Take care.

A big thank you for all the improvements @ij.

A couple very minor features in the boat ranking list I sometimes found useful in the flash version:
    1) Ability to change the width of the columns, i.e. Name.
    2) Return to the same boat ranking location.  For example, in the main (or custom) list, after moving the list down, the boat at the top is #5 (not #1).  Then, after returning to the list, #5 is still at the top.

I will also be a SOTP sailor for these races. The irl sailors will not have routers, electronic/computer tools. With honorable intent, lets level the playing 'field' as much as possible. I encourage all to accept the challenge.

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Guam to Ouvéa

The third race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us southeastward now down the Pacific, from Guam’s Apra Harbour at 13.5 degrees North, back across the Equator to the glorious New Caledonian resort island of Ouvéa, on the edge of the Tropic of Capricorn at 20.5 degrees South. It’s 2400nm, and there’s more than a few other islands in the way, so mind where you go in your Ocean 50s. Race #1981
