In similar vane, does anyone have the polars for a felucca on the Nile?! Or a Chinese junk up the Yangtse? We could then have a River Series to go with the lakes, seas and oceans. I guess there are no polars for a paddlesteamer on the Mississippi though!

Rainbow Chaser asked that comments made on Chat should be posted here, so here goes:

"SOL is all about fairness and keeping things equal across the board - surely ALL races should be included and like Svein says, there is no such thing as a non-tricky race."

Victory, Jumping land does not occur IRL. I was not intending to cut the corner, just make a tight turn by timing the movement of the boat.

I agree with you Incognito, this does need looking at.

Now I'm not a fan of jumping sli's but this morning I pre-empted the server update (and probably shouldn't). I passed just (literally just) inside Hvallatur mark in the Round Iceland. Within a minute I had dropped from P#77 before the turn to P#100 as I had not rounded the mark. I reversed and sailed back south past the mark, then north, no change in the "Hvallatur Pass NW" to "Rounded". I sailed south again past the mark, then north, no change. In the end I had to jump back across land inside the mark(fortunately I made the jump and was not stuck on land) then sailed west and then north to show "Rounded". Now I agree with putting the marks in the right place on land to stop cutting corners. I paid my penalty by dropping a good number of places but it seems crazy to me to have to jump back across land to get the right side of the mark. I would rather do a 720 if necessary on top of any penalty by loss of places but to jump back surely needs a change in the algorithms...I eventually sailed off in P#157....Comments welcome.

Great to know it's all working again. Good effort guys. I feel for SOL putting this on for ZILT and then it crashing. Hope that large fleet all comes back.

I too had a few short nights and was on for my best result at #8 but other races will come...and others will go...:)

Am I missing something? I cannot find a search facility for the forum. I am interested in the Google Earth application for SOL and I am sure details must be somewhere in the forum but cannot find it. I remember reading in chat that it is not too accurate to SLI's and land boundaries when racing so I guess we should remember to race in SOL. Thanks again for a great game!

Can the mouse wheel be activated to zoom in or out on the chart? I am forever scrolling it and nothing happens and of course I have to go and click on + or - to zoom. Just a little thing but it would be a nice facility. Thanks.

I never said it was going to be easy to work classes and I think most problems have been mentioned in chat previously. However, yours is an interesting concept with different boats / polars for classes based on performance. 76T and I were chatting about pursuit races the other day where the fast boats on performance sail from behind on archived weather and theoretically all boats cross the finish line together!

Better still in standard races it would be to only see 'line of sight' boats in the immediate circle around you. Still might need a stealth start for the first 6h though! Having said that, it would not help you learn to navigate better and at present looking at the fleet really helps you learn why you are not so good, other boats are worse and yet others better.
  • Re: Around the Americas?

There are a number of sites that publish ice charts and so if "land" or rather ice could be updated every say 24h on the servers then it might be possible.

You also have to realise that IRL many of the boats sailing through the NWP motor the tight sections through small ice as sail alone would not be controlable. SOL probably would not cater for this!

Leg Three of our Round North Island Series, in partnership with SSANZ, keeps the pressure on! From Cook Strait, the fleet turns north for a 187 nautical mile passage up the east coast to Napier. Dyer Dhow Derby 2026

Most winter weekends, SOLer wsguerin and his friends at the Mamaroneck Frostbite Association venture forth on Long Island Sound to race Dyer Dhows, originally designed as WWII tenders. Indestructible little boats, great comradeship and serious short sharp races of 10 to 20 minutes duration. Sailonline now invites you to experience the joys of the Dhow in winter, virtually, by way of a slightly longer 14nm race: from Mamaroneck to Execution Rocks, over to the Gong Buoy and back to Mamaroneck. And if the wind pipes up to 20kn and beyond, you'll find SOL's customized polar will plane, rather than nosedive!

Iceland to the Falklands 2026

Welcome to an all-new route, the first of three Round the 'Old World' of Europe, Africa, Australia and Asia. To give each leg of the ROW a bit of length we'll try to hug the coasts as little as possible, so starting in Iceland our first leg of the series, which will also be the final leg of our Quarter 1 Ocean Championships takes us 7200nm to the Falklands, the full length of the Atlantic end to end. To make sure we'll get it done within the month we'll be sailing our Maxi Trimaran.
