Board » Flag Officers » Races » 2012 SSANZ Simrad Series -what boat shall we sail?

Hi folks

Its nearly time for the first of this year's trio of B&G/SSANZ Simrad races.

In 2010 SOL sailed a Young 88, in 2011 we sailed a Young 11(mod). We now need to choose ourselves a competitive boat from SOL's BOATHOUSE

Here is the Simrad Seriescurrent entry list- we need to pick something that will be reasonably competitive!!
_______________
Which division are we following? They have different courses.
Longhaul. Which reminds me I need to setup the courses now we have hi-res mapping for NZ (in previous years I have had to reuse an old NZ map but not any longer!). Thanks!!

Not sure which SOLers are sailing IRL this time but WairuaExpress, PaulR and yachtyakka often participate (shorthaul/longhaul).

Yes indeed sailing on Panacea a Stewart 34 in the Short Haul division. All boats are 2 handed.

On crew.org.nz I also run results for the
"OLD FARTS" competition. I add the ages of the two crew members + four times the age of the yacht and from the average ages, make an adjusting OLD FARTS factor that is then applied to the TCF result and then adjusted for the 3 different race lengths over all who enter on crew.org.nz.

See Page 10 for 2011 Results

The aim is to see if young brash people who hoist spinnakers and do massive wipeouts, broaches etc are better than the older sailors who are more considerate of their advancing years and practice seamanship.

There is also a "His & Hers" division and last year one "Hers & Hers" yacht. Another prize was for the greatest fantastic, frightening, fabulous or just
f*%#ing muckup!!

At stake for 1st places in individual races and overall results were TWO bottles of Mt Gay Silver Rum with TWO bottles of Mt Gay Eclipse Rum for 2nds & 3rds, and a certificate per boat.

Can't have skippers drinking alone can we?????

All rum was gratefully recieved!!!!!!!
I even one one bottle myself!!

This year I plan to have:
a certificate for each crew member

as well as more rum . . . hic

If it breaks, it's not strong enough!
I suggest young 11 for the longhaul. The other boats mentioned do shorthaul courses.

I don't think I'll be doing the race IRL this year.
Thanks guys!

Paul love the "old farts" factor... not sure we can do that virtually plus, of course, we don't have the rum!!

Scotsman - sorry you can't race IRL this year but hopefully our interactivity with SSANZ will make the SOL version a reasonable (virtual) alternative :-)

Young 11 t'will be again!

Rapallo to Nador 2026

Welcome to Liguria’s Rapallo, there where Zarathustra spoke - at length - to Nietzsche, for our first race of nine to celebrate all things Mediterranean - fickle winds, history and olive oil. A number of our races in this new Magical Mediterranean series will be partnership with famous real-life races, but this first race is pure fiction - 780nm in refurbed IMOCA 60s, past or through the Balearic Isles and on into the Alboran Sea, to a finish off Nador on the Maroc Mediterranean coast.

Red Eye - Melville Island PYOC 2026

Melville Island is the largest of the Tivi group opposite the port of Darwin in the Timor Sea. Tropically forested and thinly populated, not a lot goes on there, but let’s race around it anyway, lar- or starboard round, it’s a little more than 120nm, so, no matter where you are navigating from on the planet, you will be hard-pressed to complete the course aboard your J-80 in daylight hours!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Guam to Ouvéa

The third race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us southeastward now down the Pacific, from Guam’s Apra Harbour at 13.5 degrees North, back across the Equator to the glorious New Caledonian resort island of Ouvéa, on the edge of the Tropic of Capricorn at 20.5 degrees South. It’s 2400nm, and there’s more than a few other islands in the way, so mind where you go in your Ocean 50s. Race #1981
