If we were to change, my only request would be to see the ACTUAL nautical chart(s) with increasing scale as one zooms in closer.

That would IMHO be more realistic, and one might even learn something which may save a life sometime in the future.

E.G. the Mackinnon race where two lost their lives. I have just watched the video clip. The written news reports mentioned a fellow boat "checked the weather buoys". Where are these? How far off shore? What sort of data is available?

Perhaps this info would be in the notes on the chart. If so then I would of zoomed in and read them, even though I live in New Zealand and are unlikely IRL to sail in the Mackinnon race.

I have suggested the TIFF format FREE charts for NZ from http://www.linz.govt.nz/hydro/charts/digital-charts/chart-images

Theses could optionally replace the daylight "white" or nighttime "black" oceans, the equivalen from being on deck to going below and looking at the paper chart on the navigators chart table or dare I say it, on the Nav GPS Chartplotter.

Optional would be best so one can turn the charts off or on as desired and to minimise download volumes and server loads.

If it breaks, it's not strong enough!
That's alright for you "Jack Watson" but I don't have any friends.........

Well done in the NASA race :)
Jack Watson, all my friends are sailing IRL too . . . and don't like being lent out free of charge.
There are royalties, commsions and taxes to consider as well as rental costs.

You guys in New Zealand are having way too much fun. Must be YY's Rum. Wish I was there. :-)
No Jack; last weekend SSANZ race I may have won the keelboat's OLD FARTS MT GAY rum, but there are protests pending on next Monday night.

Elapsed time x TCF x Ages of crew + 4 times boat's age / Average aging x course distance adjustment for 3 different courses (Large, medium & small keelboats. See crew.org.nz threads & ssanz.co.nz

This is aimed at seeing if age, experience and seamanship is better than youth, enthuasim and wild broaching.

Missed out on the "Closest actual finish time to predicted ETA" rum. I was 45 minutes out as we were becalmed for about that amount of time. I think the winner is somebody who is only 20 seconds out.

Happily I am not in the running for the "Biggest $%&# up of the Day" award.

BTW, FYI, YY's Dead Man's Rum and his Waiheke Rum taste very nice, except I can't remember much after the 4th or was that the 6th rum ?????????

Lake Ontario 300 Challenge 2026

Lake Ontario Offshore Racing (LOOR) welcomes Sailonline sailors to a second virtual version of a race in their annual series, and for the sixth year in succession the LO300. As the name implies, the LO300 is a 300nm offshore race across the length and breadth of Lake Ontario, from and back to Port Credit YC. This year, for the first time, we will be racing the 300nm circuit in Sun Fast 3200s. As usual, there is an overall prize for the SOLer who best bosses Lake Ontario over the two races hosted by Sailonline, this LO300 and the Susan Hood raced back in May, and this year also the race and the Susan Hood count towards the title of Super Buddy 2026; so, let the competition be fierce!

New Ice Age 2026 - Neumayer Station to Scott Base

For a second-half of long-distance ice-boating, we take our DNs to Antarctica for a circumnavigation of that continent in two legs clockwise, in harmony with the prevailing winds (such as there are), beginning with a race from Germany’s Neumayer Station to New Zealand’s Scott Base. It’s about 3500nm, which, if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!
