OK...the Chi-Mac will be removed from the draft August calendar and this year SOL's Race to Mackinac will be from Huron on 23 July :-)

How's that?

Post annotated by RainbowChaser :
Good News

Since this is a shorter course they let the slower classes sail the rhumbline whereas the Maxis have to navigate the Cove Island buoy as should we.

I am setting up the race with Cove Island waypoint in it...

9. COURSE

From the starting line in lower Lake Huron to the Cove Island Buoy set in the vicinity
of Cove Island, Ontario, Canada,
visually leaving this to port
then to the finish line at Mackinac Island,
leaving the Duck Islands to starboard
and Bois Blanc Island to port.

The Cove Island Buoy is a conical yellow buoy with a yellow strobe light flashing once every four seconds that will be set at approximately:

latitude N 45°20.00’,
longitude W 081°51.00’.

Cove Island Buoy will be a necked turn & will require that the rounding algorithm functions as intended.

The race and weather are now set up so.. please log in as the sol boat:

Then go here.

Let me know what you think! The race is scheduled for 1600utc on 23 August :-)
Course Addendum:

Leaving the Duck Islands to Starboard will not be able to be implemented due to the rubber band nature of our Rhumbline course behaviour. They lie approximately halfway & north between the Cove Island Buoy and the finish.

However leaving Bois Blanc to Port is doable with an additional waypoint on its northern tip corresponding to:

- 84.4240 W
+ 45.8210 N

Then the Finish line mid-point moved slightly west to the Round Island Channel:

- 84.6100 W
+ 45.8450 N

leaving its length as is.

8mr Who - please now look at the course.

I think the finish line is in the wrong place as half of it is obscured by land... this is one of the issues raised in the thread about finish line lengths so... I now think it would be better to have the finish at:

45.91 / -84.61

so that it is not too on top of the new Bois Blanc Mark.

Yes? If you agree, I will move the finish and then archive the race until we need it.

:-)

First let me say that the new waypoint on Bois Blanc works very well, as the label does not obscure the tip that must be rounded.

Now as for the matter of the finish line itself. In actuality it is a very short line so the portion that lies from the midpoint and north towards Mission Point on Mackinac Island or usable portion is more than is detailed in the real race.

This however is made somewhat problematic due to the fact the the position, contours and relationship between Round Island & Mackinac Island are rendered so poorly by the level of resolution available to us.

Round Island in fact is located due South and not offset as is the case here. So for us, we must first pass by it to reach a correct ending so that Mission Point is aligned to the North.

In essence the finish lies between these 2 Islands with a North/South orientation. We have come as close to that configuration as the constraints we are working with affords us, I believe.

One accommodation would be to lift the mid-point just enough so that without changing the overall length of the line it would nearly touch the shore of Mackinac on our map.

Reading from the coordinates on the screen this revised mid-point placement is proposed as:

- 84.6090 W
+ 45.8490 N

Mackinac Island

Africa by Sea 2025 - Suez to Port Said

When Napoleon (briefly) occupied Egypt at the turn to the 19th C, he ordered his expedition’s Directeur des Ponts et Chaussées, Jacques-Marie Le Père, to evaluate the ancient, derelict, infilled course of a Ptolemaic canal connecting the Red Sea to the Nile via the Great Bitter Lake, versus a new canal to the Mediterranean directly. Neither were considered feasible – locks to climb a pauvre-surveyed 10m sea-level difference, or continuous dredging of the Nile, would both be equally financially prohibitive. Fifty years passed before the unlikeliness of Le Père’s survey finding was challenged and a French Compagnie Universelle du Canal Maritime de Suez obtained a 99-year concession from the Khedive of Egypt, Said Pasha, to construct and operate a canal from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean, much against the will of the Ottoman Sultan, Abdulmecid I (the Pasha’s nominal overlord), and the wishes of the (Irish) British prime minister, Lord Palmerston. The year was 1859, the very number of this race (planning, dear boy, planning!), which, despite the canal’s double-super-tanker gauge and lack of locks, is strictly prohibited to sailors IRL. But not SOLers! 85nm in Fareast 28Rs to complete your circumnavigation of Africa!

Sinbad by Balloon 2025 - Carnarvon to Dondra

From here, our home in Bharatavarṣa is now north west of us – said Sinbad to his fellow balloonists. Perhaps we can ride the wind first further north, and then catch the winds that every year bring the rain, perhaps not. It’s 2600nm and we could be aloft awhile, so, Master el-Quarters, victuals only, no sandbags, provisioning the giant hamper. It will be not a picnic!
