Here is my picture
If it breaks, it's not strong enough--if it doesn't, it's too heavy.
Great! The mystery of the "crooked line" explained without a single word, and how to predict the result of a gybe/tack. Thanks 76.

And not only that. As the saying goes: "The proof is in the pudding".

Thanks for providing the pudding Rod.

To 76:- I have followed through on your reasoning and you are of course right. In the circumstances of yesterdays race, the port tack should be taken first, as the wind will have veered further by the time the starboard tack is taken. I was forgetting that the wind continues to veer in a persistent shift... Equally, when the wind is backing, the starboard tack is taken first. This applies both up and down wind.
If it breaks, it's not strong enough--if it doesn't, it's too heavy.
I should clarify:-- A veering wind is shifting clockwise (increasing compass degrees). A backing wind is shifting anti-clockwise.
If it breaks, it's not strong enough--if it doesn't, it's too heavy.
4 pictures tell more than 4000 words :-)

Off course this in practice proven theory only will pay in a continious, persistant shift. In oscillating shifty conditions, as in "shorter" round the bouy racing, you will have to watch out for the coming shifts. The theory will work as well there, but keep an eye on the coming shift. You have to sail on "favoured tack"

If you're still in control, you're not going fast enough.

Theory always deals with the 'Impossibly Perfect", but this merely provides a frame-work to give pattern to your thinking. The 'theory' isn't wrong until you can "prove" it is wrong. It would be extremely rare to ever have a tool such as SailonLine when faced with the reality of spray in your face and cold salt water down the neck of your 'jersey', and a wind that you were not certain was really shifting.
If it breaks, it's not strong enough--if it doesn't, it's too heavy.
The third practice race will be tonight, Wednesday, 16 March as follows:

TIME: 1900utc

START: Cross the M1/M5 line from E to W

COURSE: Start - through the M3/M4 Gate from E to W - through the M1/M5 Gate from W to E - through the M3/M4 Gate from E to W - Finish

FINISH: Cross the M1/M5 line from W to E

Attached diagram is of proposed course.

Christmas to Christmas Island 2025

Two waypoints, start and finish, and between them 5827 NM of two oceans. Not much time if we want to sit at the Christmas Eve table. You will need to maintain an average speed of over 10 knots, maybe quite possible with this Maxi Trimaran, but prepare your vessel well and choose the best of the many possible routes. Hands up everyone who knew there were TWO Christmas Islands?! OK, maybe you have sailed this Sailonline course before... but it's time to get ready for the 2025 challenge of racing between Christmas Island in the Pacific to Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean! It also marks the conclusion of our prestigious Ocean Race Championship 2025. Please have fun! Fair winds!

Andaman Islands PYOC 2025

The Andaman Islands are an archipelago, made up of 200 islands, in the northeastern Indian Ocean. Together with the Nicobar Islands to their south, the Andamans serve as a maritime boundary between the Bay of Bengal to the west and the Andaman Sea to the east. These waters will be the theater of our next 240nm race in the ARCH 2025 series. Which one you choose depends only on you, i.e. your Elan 410 sport will leave the Andaman Islands on the starboard or port side.

Sinbad by Balloon 2025 - Carnarvon to Dondra

From here, our home in Bharatavarṣa is now north west of us – said Sinbad to his fellow balloonists. Perhaps we can ride the wind first further north, and then catch the winds that every year bring the rain, perhaps not. It’s 2600nm and we could be aloft awhile, so, Master el-Quarters, victuals only, no sandbags, provisioning the giant hamper. It will be not a picnic!
