Hi RC... I am working on both a weekend and week race that I can have ready very soon. Since it is my first try at designing races, they may need a few tweaks :>)).
I am considering the weekend event as a timed race but I don't know if there is "criteria' for that.

I will post both files here (??) or should I start another thread for each?

Thanks!
SP
Hi ShamPir - attachments here will be fine. Don't worry if tweaks are needed - the race description/invitation and boat choice are crucial as, of course, are the intended waypoints :-) Just sing out if you need any help.

Timed races are great fun and very popular and thus quite server intensive.. we would need to schedule such a race when nothing apart from our Global Challenge is running. It is also conventional to state upfront when the race will close (usually a week is enough) so folks get a sense of what opportunities for a good time are available.
How about reviving some oldies? The Caribbean Sprint last ran 2/22/10, The Cyclages Volcano Run from 2/20/10, Mistli's BBQ-race to the End of the World run in 2009 on 2/28 or one of the timed races.
captjack - Thank you! Its good not to forget the old-but-good races (hence the Word document appended to each draft race calendar post listing all races run in that month in previous years!

We ran Mistli's race for her birthday last October but Cyclades, Bimini Beach and Caribbean Sprint are deffo now on the cards!! :-D

Do you have any sense of when the wx/winds in the Carib are likely to be optimal for SOL? i.e., pretty strong however variable!! (the Med is always light and fickle it seems)!

What about a revival of the Kiel Week Race?
Perhaps renamed, maybe to something like Danish Archipelago race, as Kiel Week is only in June.
If we do it in February or beginning of March, i might act as kind of a tourist guide. ;-) Later the year i'm likely to be at sea again, so possibly not available.

The Carribean reaches from ~5° to ~15° N which is well inside the Belt of Trades, hence quite steady winds. The Mediterreanean instead is located around ~30° up to ~40° N which is likely the latitude of the Azores, known for its High and the resulting Calms. :-)
Probably I have not got the entire discussion. But I don't see the 1-day- weekend races anymore (the Roslagen will last 2 days as well).

regards

Stu
Stu... I started to put together a couple of
"dragraces" as I hadn't seen any so far during my brief SOLexperience. Are those types of races popular? Could make a few good ones in high-wind areas to fill gaps in the schedule if that is useful.

William
Tazu - that's a good idea... the Kieler Wocher race was a good'un!

StuArt - I had hoped the Roslagen at only 86nm would have been a day race! Which short ones in particular are you referring to please?

ShamPir - drag races sound good! We need more races in N America!!!

General Comment:

The only snag I see with v short races, as can be seen from the informal, unofficial practice races, is that because SOL was designed as an ocean racing tool, the boats "jump" is very obvious when we are zoomed in and is offputting especially to newbies. SOL's visual strength is in the longer races.

At the moment with the Global Challenge running in the background, so to speak,is that using fast boats and tricky courses needing a lot of manoeuvring might run counter to server loads.

Immense frustration is caused when, in close quarters with a fast boat, commands take more than 15 seconds to execute!

BUT keep all the ideas coming folks! I will be putting a draft March calendar up over the coming weekend.
How short can "dragraces" / "sprints" be?
Is there a minimum distance? time?
I can come up with a lot of short dragraces / sprint type races here in South East Florida.
I made the Florida - Bahamas - Florida race, not sure what that is considered. I have a few others I have made also, about the same distance or shorter.

Lake Ontario 300 Challenge 2026

Lake Ontario Offshore Racing (LOOR) welcomes Sailonline sailors to a second virtual version of a race in their annual series, and for the sixth year in succession the LO300. As the name implies, the LO300 is a 300nm offshore race across the length and breadth of Lake Ontario, from and back to Port Credit YC. This year, for the first time, we will be racing the 300nm circuit in Sun Fast 3200s. As usual, there is an overall prize for the SOLer who best bosses Lake Ontario over the two races hosted by Sailonline, this LO300 and the Susan Hood raced back in May, and this year also the race and the Susan Hood count towards the title of Super Buddy 2026; so, let the competition be fierce!

New Ice Age 2026 - Neumayer Station to Scott Base

For a second-half of long-distance ice-boating, we take our DNs to Antarctica for a circumnavigation of that continent in two legs clockwise, in harmony with the prevailing winds (such as there are), beginning with a race from Germany’s Neumayer Station to New Zealand’s Scott Base. It’s about 3500nm, which, if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!
