Welcome again. :)
teşekkür ederim Equinox - hopefully this fabulous race, designed so carefully by Turkish SOLers, will once more remind and enlighten us as to the amazing complexity and history of your country :-)

This has always been one of my favourite races, even if I usually get an appalling result :-D
While my boat was beached on the shores of the Bosphorus, I was rowing on the Golden Horn amongst the old city walls of Constantinopolis! Exercise and culture, all in one!

What you see in the background (the reddish brown buildingon the right) is The Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople (Greek: Οἰκουμενικὸν Πατριαρχεῖον Κωνσταντινουπόλεως, Oikoumenikòn Patriarcheîon Konstantinoupóleos, IPA: [ikumenikˈon patriarˈxion konstantinuˈpoleos]; Turkish: Rum Ortodoks Patrikhanesi, "Greek Orthodox Patriarchate"), part of the wider Orthodox Church, is one of the fourteen autocephalous churches within the communion of Orthodox Christianity. It is headed by the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, currently Bartholomew I.

Because of its historical location at the former capital of the Byzantine Empire and its role as the Mother Church of most modern Orthodox churches, the Ecumenical Patriarchate has enjoyed the status of "Primus inter pares (first among equals)" among the world's Eastern Orthodox prelates. Unlike the Pope, he does not exercise control over the individual autocephalous churches, which are fully autonomous. He is, however, widely regarded as the representative and spiritual leader of the world's 300 million Orthodox Christians.

A Great Blog full of wonderful information. Thanks...I have enjoyed sailing some of these areas IRL. Thanks again. :-)

Its that time of year again... when SOLers explore the magic, history and beauty of Turkey.

Don't forget, if you stay near to the start in SOL races you can participate in round-the-cans short evening races - those for Sail Around Turkey will be posted here

In anticipation of Sailing around Turkey next month, here's a recitation of 'Sailing to Byzantium' by WB Yeats (1.5mins) and a lecture about the poem by Prof. Amy M Green (7.5mins).
Enjoy!

Sailonline’s 15th Birthday Balloon Race
Sailonline offers a huge variety of boats to sail in. One of the more unusual ones has got to be SOL's Balloon, which was polarized by past SOLmaster 76Trombones. Notably, the SOL Balloon will actually ‘sail’ in other directions other than straight downwind, although it will not 'sail' over land or beyond a 'beam reach'. Like in 2013 and 2018, we will be taking the Balloon across the Atlantic from St. John's and 'land' it in the sea off the Cliffs of Moher.
