Gil ...when I say "round it correctly" I mean as per Committee RULES ...;)

There is another way of defining correct rounding IRL :

all marks MUST remain internal to your overall course.....

Perhaps this statement will strike another 57 exceptions but the RULE of the Committee , that happens to be the IRL RULE is that a mark MUST be rounded in the correct direction , on the correct side , AND ...you cannot go backwards at the mark same side once rounded ....All one might say is that the rule is not liked ....That is not my case ....As mentioned many times whatever in SOL is IRL seamless I like ....including non challenging the RC ..;) ;)

I fully agree with Winston. The rounding system as it is now is fair, and quite clear.

Of course we still have situations not the same as RL, but these are less artificial. Exmer's smart move in the Round Britain was risky, because he had to take a lot longer way initially than just turning back at the mark. I believe this is exactly what makes it fair. He saw an option I did not see and got rewarded.

There will always be corner cases where the rules of SOL allow something a similar RL race does not allow. The current rounding system generates a lot less of such cases which makes it the better system IMHO.

SOL's rules now mirror international rules of sailing.

Look closely at "G" - apart from the crazy path it's a simple mark-to-port rounding., same as "A". Maybe he got swept past the mark by the tide or something. Once you pull your "path string" tight it has to wrap the course - simple.

E and F are the only cases where a 360 comes into play. E is legal, F is not. SOL handles this now without problems.

As for the Race Instructions. We have no choice but to sail to server rules, and the only thing that defines the course are the marks. SOL places constraints on layout that mean that some "options" are impossible to close, and some desired constraints can't be implemented. RBI "outside all rocks that clear water" is an impossible layout in SOL - if someone wants to take a stab at an attempted design it's probably a profitable discussion!

For example, the Round Britain : place another buoy more south close to the coast and the debate is closed.

Red Eye - Melville Island PYOC 2026

Melville Island is the largest of the Tivi group opposite the port of Darwin in the Timor Sea. Tropically forested and thinly populated, not a lot goes on there, but let’s race around it anyway, lar- or starboard round, it’s a little more than 120nm, so, no matter where you are navigating from on the planet, you will be hard-pressed to complete the course aboard your J-80 in daylight hours!

The third race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us southeastward now down the Pacific, from Guam’s Apra Harbour at 13.5 degrees North, back across the Equator to the glorious New Caledonian resort island of Ouvéa, on the edge of the Tropic of Capricorn at 20.5 degrees South.
