- RESPECT FOR VOLUNTEERS
- Board » General Discussion
-
Hi SOLers !
Sailonline Management have seen, during the recent past, a sizeable surge of criticism addressed to those who run the platform behind the scenes. SRC has seen the vast majority of such criticism - too many times as utterly inappropriate; I have decided to address the matter.
I take it for granted that everyone at SOL is aware that the Teams working behind the scenes do so in total volunteer mode and only for passion. This does not mean that judgements are always right or that mistakes are impossible, but surely does mean that they deserve our complete respect for what they do.
Constructive criticism is one thing and has always been welcome. Good examples are changes to the rules regarding DC-able starts and finishes during Ocean races and some modifications to the platform features that have come from constructive comments.
Criticism like: “This race has been badly organized because there is no wind” …. OR ….” this boat is too slow for a race with light wind like this one “…. are NON constructive comments, and as such are unacceptable criticism.
Races are planned several months in advance and, with few exceptions (e.g. trade winds) no such long-term prediction of Wx can be assessed in advance. (Our volunteers are neither computers, nor meteorologists).
I have personally seen such sarcastic and disrespectful comments and criticism appearing in race chat.
The objective of this message is to alert that this lack of respect will no longer be accepted, and appropriate action will be taken to preserve the rights of those that want to offer this virtual sailing on SOL waters, to be able to do so in happiness, like those who enjoy the platform.
I will not lose even one volunteer because he/she has been offended on such grounds and I would add that such a public lack of respect also acts to deter any new volunteers who are now, and will forever be, needed for the future.
Piero

- 2023 RANKINGS BY NATION - INDIVIDUAL AND TEAM
- Board » Sailonline Yacht Club
-
The rankings by Nation have seen in 2022 a clear limit in their formula:
The moment one Nation (USA) has a combination of very high participating numbers … AND … a very high level of collective skills, the developing results of the TEAM formula leave no space for any kind of competition for top spot to any other Team in the SOL arena.
In actual facts the GOLD for Team USA has never been in danger throughout the year, and the only interesting development to be seen there has been about the developing winning USA TRIO.
A lot of effort and brainstorm has been invested behind the scenes as to how revamping interest in that competition, but so far no fair and easy to implement solution has been found. Another attempt will be made during 2023.
SO :
The Rankings by Nation ( INDIVIDUAL AND TEAM) scheme will be continued in 2023, without changes.
The Rankings by Nation thread is here in the SYC partition of the Forum because, whilst the INDIVIDUAL rankings by Nation are open to everyone irrespective of membership , the TEAM ones are reserved to SYC members.
Attached underneath you find 2 DOCUMENTS:
One illustrates the mechanicals of the rankings scheme (by Nation both Individual and Team)
The other one illustrates the mechanicals that will lead to reward the individual SOLers (by Skipper both Individual and Team)
At the end of each calendar month an up to date situation will be posted here for everyone to look at and plan improvements !
Please feel free to comment or ask for any clarification writing to coord@sailonline.org
I will publish here for everyone information the most important comments and clarification requests.
Happy 2023 SOLing !!

- Board » Sailonline Race Committee » Championships

SRC is pleased to announce
THE 2023 SOL CHAMPIONSHIP NORs
________________________________________
For 2023 we want to continue with some change, aimed to see some evolution in the years to come.
Two out of the main four Championships will not change format in 2023.
The ALL ROUND Championship, with its 4 quarters portraying four different groups of boat types and sizes has been successful in 2022 and will continue.
The Ocean Championship, as always the most appealing to the majority of SOLers, will carry no change.
After some debate we have reduced the number of Sprint races valid for the Championship to 12 (3 per quarter) but actually increased the number of sprint races for the sprint maniacs to 24 total , 12 of which non valid for the Championship. Twice a month it will be " hands on till time" for many, but careful to identify from the relevant codes which races are Sprint Championship and which are not !
Good news for many around the world ! :
each quarter of the Sprint Championship will see start times favourable to each of the three main areas of the world (Europe-Americas-FarEast) whilst last quarter will see one race with start time suitable for each of the three areas ( more details in calendar)
Timed races Championship goes back to 12 (one each month). This will offer more opportunity for many newcomers to test SOLing in the Timed arenas that will be available during more than 50% of the time in 2023.
In a nutshell :
OCEAN CHAMPIONSHIP
Annual Championship
12 races (one each month) - 2 discards
Quarterly Championships
the 3 races of each quarter - NO discards
TIMED CHAMPIONSHIP
Annual Championship
12 races (three each quarter) - 2 discards
Quarterly Championships
the 3 races of each quarter - NO discards
SPRINT CHAMPIONSHIP
Annual Championship
12 races (three each quarter) - 2 discards
Quarterly Championships
the 3 races of each quarter - NO discards
ALL ROUND CHAMPIONSHIP
Annual Championship
12 races (one each month) - 2 discards
Quarterly Championships
the 3 races of each quarter - NO discards
SUPERSOLER 2022
This year again it will be the summa of 48 Championship races (12 OCCH + 12 TRCH + 12 SPRCH + 12 ARCH) and will allow 6 discards.
Happy Championships SOLing in 2023 !

- 2023 SMPF SCHEME
- Board » Sailonline Yacht Club
-
THE 2023 SMPF SCHEME IS LAUNCHED!
SPONSORSHIP REQUESTS ARE WELCOMED
===============================
The SMPF scheme (SYC Membership Pay Forward) will continue in 2023.
The changes to eligibility that have been introduced in 2022 have worked well , and therefore will continue as set.
At the end of 12 races in 2023 ( one each month) one annual FREE membership to the Sailonline Yacht Club will be made available to the best finishing (and fully qualifying as per rules hereunder) NON SYC member in each of the nominated races. The prize can be sponsored by any SOLer willing to do so.
The sponsors of previous editions of the SMPF scheme did either make their Sponsorship publicly known, or acted anonymously under the flag of the Sailonline Yacht Club.
The number of slots available for sponsoring one SMPF is extremely limited, as again in 2023 ONLY ONE SMPF race per month will be nominated and sponsored. If you are interested, please hurry up and contact me. By responding promptly to this invitation you will secure yourself a slot in the 2023 Sponsorship list
All you need to do at this time is to write to: coord@sailonline.org , and confirm your willingness to support the SMPF scheme in 2023. If available you will be granted one slot (one month) , and the race of that month that will be nominated for SMPF scheme will be “your SMPF race”. (Traditionally that will be the Ocean Championship race for the given month).
Some important information before you decide:
1)– Your participation to the scheme, should you want to remain anonymous, will be treated in fully confidential mode by the Coordinator and the Sailonline Nav Sim AB Board, thus there will be only three persons aware of your position in the scheme.
2)- This is by no means a solicitation to invest USD 35,00 into our platform, and you should not in any way feel obliged to adhere to the scheme.
3) The prize will be delivered to the first NON SYC MEMBER over the finish line, who had NEVER been an SYC member before. As any NON SYC member over the finish line could be the prize winner, it is recommended that the next thread hereunder is looked at after an SMPF race , as the prize winner will be announced as soon as possible after the arrival of the first boat.
4)- Should the best NON SYC member over the finish line not be eligible because lacking the requisite of point 3) above , the next in line will be identified and so on until a fully qualifying yacht is found and declared as the winner.
5)-The SYC membership earned will start AFTER the date and time of finishing the qualifying race , as the status in that race must be and remain " NON SYC "
6)- The SMPF prize will be delivered directly to the winner at the end of each nominated race, without asking for acceptance or collection. The winning SOLer will be made SYC member “ex officio” and the Management looks forward to hear from him/her sometimes after delivery.
We look forward to hearing from you and to a well supported 2023 SMPF scheme!
On behalf of Sailonline NAV SIM AB

Sinbad Braves the Bay of Bengal 2023
“Sinbad, you sorry sailor, why have you not told me of this great sea, this giant bay, stretching hundreds of thousands of qasbah east of Al-Hindi to fabled lands where tea and rice and rubber is abundant?” and Sinbad replied “Ahh, umm, shall I go have a look. May I take the Judel Vrolijk 62 again, it’s going to be a long voyage, perhaps a million and one half qasbah (c 3000nm)? I’ll start in Chittagong and follow the coast to the southern tip of the Hindus’ land, round Serendip, head east into the vastness of the seas, and if I’m lucky (no pun intended, oh Mighty One) I shall find land again and then head north and see where I end up”. “Fair winds, Sinbad”, said the Sultan.

Maryland to Alaska 2023
Welcome to this September edition of 2023 OCCH. This route was first sailed in 2020. At the time it was inspired by Matt Rutherford's single-handed Red Dot Expedition around the Americas in 2012, SOLer Renegade proposing a half-around from Maryland over the North into the Pacific and back through the Panama Canal, in 5 legs, 5 years later. Leg 2 across the North West Passage proved to be particularly challenging and so to create a proper Ocean Race, SRC combined Leg 2 with Leg 1 to give you a race of at least 4000nm from Maryland to Alaska, now to be sailed in our magnificent Archer 78.
