I'm trying to make BW work but can't get anything from the fonction "optimize" except a straight line.
Polar seem ok, but whatever the grib file I load, when I press on right button of the mouse, I have the following message : "Wind out of bounds"
I tried to load grib files from Ugrib, zygrib and Brains'site, result is the same.
Thanks in advance
Josh,

Once you have loaded the polar file, you also have to specify it on the actual route you're using. Check that the route you're optimizing has the name of the polar beside on the Route Manager window. If it doesn,t go to the Route Options window for the route you want to optimize and write the name of the polar file you want to use. See attached picture.

Hope this helps!

Thank you Exmer, you were right, the polar's name was missing, but also some values were not correct for this small map.

I changed them as per your exemple and it's now working.

But I still don't understand why I don't have wind values (wind out of bounds) and how to compare with datas in Sol game ?

I also don't know what the values in nav. details refer to... for example GC Crs and Rh Crs... Avg K don't correspond with my actual speed... I thought I would find a cc value or a twa to follow, but nothing !

Is it correct ?

Thanks again
Joshua,

Try capturing your screen and uploading the picture, that way I can understand the problem better. On the current Ouzo race it is very hard to get an out of bounds error!!

Make sure to set Bluewater to give the output in True degrees not Magnetic!! Here's an example of my output for the last part of the Ouzo race. See also attached picture The output does not give you a TWA but it does give you the TWD and the course to follow so you can compute TWA if you want to. The GC Crs (Great Circle Course) and the Rh Crs (Rhumbline Course) should be the same when the grid is small. This is the course to follow. Look at the ETA column there you have the time to use for DC's and use either GC Crs or Rh Crs as the course. At the far right (you have to open the Details window large enough) you will find the Wind info. TWD first then TWS. The AVG K column is the boatspeed for that section of route.

Hope this helps!

Many thanks Exmer, you answered to all my questions :)

Now I understand better, even if BW is crashing again and again... don't know why, maybe values in time and distances resolution ?

I shall try again tomorrow morning.

Have a good night, hope to "see" you soon
Josh,

BW crashes a lot on me too! I discovered that if in the route options I only select the route to be visible, ( no isochrones, no reverse isochrones) then it crashes less often using small grid dimensions...

Cheers!
Ok, I cancel isochrones (never seen anyway...)

Trying BW on Sunday Scurry, I have the following discrepancies in wind : value on Sol are 19,1 knts and 329 deg. whereas BW gives me 27 knts and 343 deg.

Hi Josh,

I missed the start for Sunday Scurry (preferred to sleep ;)) anyways on your route options window you have a start time of 10:00:00 while your ouput says you start at 08:00 Z ? To avoid any confusion I always put the date and the time on the Route Options window that way the program knows exactly which grib file sequence to use.

Regards,
Hi Exmer :)

About Sunday Scurry, you didn't miss anything...

I entered my local time because I read this :

"A time without a Z is interpreted as being in the time zone of
the computer (ship's time)"

So I suppose it is the same, but not sure...

Anyway, the real problem I have with grib files loaded from Brain's site is that twd and tws are incorrect. I tried to calculate mentionning @now as start time and it is still as wrong as in my example.

Will try with ugrib to see if there is a difference.

See you

Edit : A bit less wrong with Ugrib files but still useless... After Maui race Brain told us that he would try to make his grib file work with BW... don't know what happened after that !

Josh,

I noticed during the Ouzo race, that the weather from the cursor (screen) was totally different that the weather from the SOL's "instruments". Not sure why. However the weather readings from the SOL's instruments matched perfectly with those from Expedition and Bluewater, and of course the boat "sails" with the weather from the instruments, not the weather shown on screen. Maybe this was happening in todays Scurry race too. I will give the Scurry race a look to see if this was happening today also.

Regards,

Toño

Newport Bermuda Race 2026

The 636-mile Newport Bermuda Race is one of the oldest regularly scheduled ocean races, and with the Fastnet and the Sydney Hobart Race, it is one of the three great classic races of the yachting world. First raced in 1906, now in its 54th biennial, the Race can again also be participated in online. In real life, the race is open to entry in four different division – Double-Handed, St. David's Lighthouse, Gibbs Hill Lighthouse, and Finisterre Division – which in the past we have also offered online. This year, however, our online race will be all-in one-design in silky swift Club Swan 50 yachts, so that your results can count towards SOL’s SUPerBUDdy title, whilst hopefully still giving you a chance of overall line honours against the fastest yachts of the real-life Gibbs Hill Division, especially if you can find some forecast winds that don’t quite work out that way on the real water!
