Board » General Discussion » Language in Chat

I was a bit taken back last night when I was told to "read the f...g manual" by someone from the race committee!!!
My two young Daughters play this game and I would rather that they didnt have to read that sort of thing, so needless to say that myself and niether of them will not be sailing with SOL anymore.
While I _completely_ agree that language in chat should be age appropriate for *all* potential SOLers, it has to be emphasised that the SOL race committee (SRC) is open to everyone and participation by _everyone_ is encouraged. We're an advisory body only - NOT an official entity of SOL.

The chat tends to reflect the tone of the present _active_ chat participants, most of whom are well known to all concerned. The reminder to the community that chat may be read by SOLers that are lurking or otherwise not accounted for when making personal decorum choices is _most_ welcome, and I'm sure that everyone will take it to heart.

Everyone get worked up when "issues" arise. Late-night-local-time is an understandable but not good enough excuse. Easy enough to keep it friendly for all concerned.

Regards,

I wonder why the sentence "rtfm" is repeated in the forum, when it was so disturbing in the chat.
Moreover I know this sentence only as a joke and in this way it was meant in the chat by that RC-member. There was nothing disturbing inside and children who can replace the stars know already what they have to know.
I'm happy that your boat victory still sails and everybody cooled down a bit. The new rules are an improvement for our game.

They are chosen by SOL and represent this entity whether intended or not. One would expect better than normal behavior for this reason alone. It is a total disregard for responsibility to say otherwise.

I don't see how the sentence in question could be construed as a joke. No matter how I look at it it comes out derogatory.

As to whether there should be rules concerning etiquette in chat, and what they should or shouldn't be: I would hope that common decency would be enough.

How far any rules should go regarding young people being present isn't so clear. I have no strong feelings in this regard
The "sentence" came with a smiley

edit: I used "RTFM" in chat - with a smiley - also a few weeks ago.
I didn't know and didn't expect that kids are playing this game. I will consider this.

Hirilondë - the SRC isn't chosen by SOL. It's a very loosely organized, independent group of volunteers that contribute time and effort when they can, and feed ideas from the userbase to SOL for consideration.

Anyone who self-identifies as helping with the SRC has the same level of personal responsibility as every other SOLer.
Good explanation of some initialisms

The Vineyard Race 2025

For the first time since first hosting a virtual Vineyard in cooperation with Long Island's Stamford Yacht Club back in 2010, due to an operational calendaring error, Sailonline has missed the start of the real life race, the USA’s Labor Day weekend this year unusually falling across the turn of August. Silly SOL! So, a week late please join us anyway for a virtual rerun of Stamford’s iconic annual overnighter from their club line out the sound to Buzzard's Bay Light near Martha's Vineyard Island and back again, leaving Block Island to starboard. This year, Sailonline is making its magic MC 38 available to competitors, a race boat with a quirky polar that will require you to stay wide awake as you speed around the c 250 nm course, in rockstar style!
