Board » Practice Racing » IMSYC 2010 - PRE-RACE INFORMAL MATCHRACING - OPEN TO ALL

Page: 1 2 Next

Post annotated by Incognito :
This thread was moved from the category Races.
Once again the intrepid/sociable matchracers of SOL are planning at least one practice matchrace before the IMSYC start on Tuesday evening.

The FIRST MATCHRACE will be as follows:

Date: 14 February 2010
Start: 66.12N /12.43E
Finish: 65.67 / 11.80
Time: 1400utc

Remember to zoom your SOL chart so that you can see only two decimal places.. then you will be able to pick up the start/finish points more precisely.

In practice, as you know, in order to stop we need to turn into wind (i.e., to set the TWA to ZERO/0) - to avoid this complicating any DCs we need to set, in this matchrace the finish is a grounding at the stated coordinates!!

ALL ARE WELCOME TO JOIN IN - ITS GREAT PRACTICE FOR THE REAL THING!!
The race started on time at 1400utc for four of the five boats.

The Day 1 Racers

Perenkist in a Marlin
Smo in a Love
Vic in an Optimist
RainbowChaser in a JoNi-Storm

The fifth racer, newsartist (Lightning), started several hours behind the others.

By 1645hrs the boats were well into the lighter winds, so it was interesting to not the rankings (based on distance-to-go on straight lines drawn in GoogleEarth) which were:

1st Vic -- 19.11nm
2nd Perenkist -- 19.63nm
3rd 'Chaser -- 19.79nm
4th Smo -- 20.13

By 1800utc the winds had backed and eased even more and the front four racers were placed thus:

1st Vic -- 15.38nm
2nd 'Chaser --16.19
3rd Perenkist --16.24nm
4th Smo -- 16.99nm

but to be fair, 'Chaser had only just tacked to port to compensate for the shifty winds, while Perenkist had made an earlier judgement to do this.

2130hrs saw the full five boats pretty much forming a group - shows that Lightning (the choice of newsartist) is probably lightning-fast!!

1st Vic -- 7.97nm
2nd 'Chaser 9.16nm
3rd Smo -- 9.41nm
4th Perenkist -- 9.42nm
5th newsartist -- 16.66

Vic, 'Chaser and Perenkist had been sailing to a fairly matched strategy while Smo had struck out and taken a more easterly route... interesting that this had brought Smo (Love) up the ranking!!

At 2322utc the rankings were:

1. Vic (3.73);
2. Rainbow (5.43);
3. Perenkist (5.73);
4. Smo (5.81);
5. news (14.84).

Start-Time: 1200utc
Start from: 65.67 / 11.80 on the Island of Vega

Unofficial results of the Valentine's Day race....

Victorious wins by making a surf run down the west coast of Vega Island, and diving in yards from the target point.

Sassy arrived from the southwest, before Rainbow Chaser and Parenkist. Rainbow led into a half mile finishing circle, but Parenkist touched first short of the Mark, as RC went long. Both slanted in on long safe courses.

Smo came in on a curving TWA course, and newsartist is 11.3 miles out.

Khilbert is coming in, and 001rob, and Cobblerslast seem to be joining as well, (or hoping that we have beer to share?

All are welcome to join the race back to the Bodoe Start point if you can make it to Vega by the 1200z start time!

As clarification has been sought - there is no "start line" at Bodo, but a start point.. the following will apply:

MATCHRACE WINNER TODAY IS: first to ground at or v v close to 67.28 / 14.34 OR the closest to the actual start point at Bodo by 1830utc on 16feb10
1500z Match Race Update....

There seems to be at least three boats racing who haven't said anything. I am including them in our rankings, marked (like this).

The 'race' started at 1200z

RC will update from Google Earth soon, but estimates now are:

(Lakis-optimist, *start time not noted*)
Sassy-optimist
(Cobblerslast-normandy)
(Mulligan*jumped start*-Windigo)
newsartist-lightning
Perenkist- marlin
Victorious-optimist
Smo-love
Rainbow Chaser- storm
001rob-marlin
khilbert *1,5 hr late start* -love

Did I miss anybody?

It should be noted the khilbert started some hours behind the main group and that Mulligan was not back at the start and hasn't even indicated his participation!!

The rankings are based on a GoogleEarth straight line measurement to the finish coordinates.

2. perenkist 75,2 nm
3. news 75,8 nm

Rainbow Chaser and Sassy who have the tools are sensibly sleeping. Using the map tools, here are the 0430z standings of the Match Race....

DTG:

Smo 39.7, Victorious 39.8(too close to call)
Sassy 41.5
Cobblerslast 45.0

(Aether 46.2)
newsartist 48.9
Perenkist 49.3
(khilbert 52.2)
001rob 63.2

Aether joined in progress, and khilbert ran the full course starting 1:29hr after the fleet.

Overnight has seen a major change in positions as the inclusion of an extra wx update at 0024 caught several boats napping (well, literally sleeping!!) - those of an insomniac disposition, however, or in a suitable timezone appear to have taken the wind changes in stride and made good gains.

It definitely looks as if the shore grounding finish position at 67.28 / 14.34 will see all boats arrive before the deadline of 1830 (a self-imposed deadline to permit pre-SOL race chat to take place!).

Rankings a short while ago revealed the following:

1. sassy - 13.68nm
2. Smo - 15.68nm
3. Vic - 16.04nm
4. Perenkist - 17.62nm
5. newsartist - 18.3nm
6. Rainbow - 18.74nm
7. khilbert - 24.4nm
8. cobblerslast - 37.47nm
9. 001rob - 48.61nm

Sadly cobblerslast appears to have been worst affected by the wx changes as she was left on a TWA overnight and is now hanging out in the Norwegian fjords!

The positions of the boats didn't really change much in the final stages - all had happened overnight as previously mentioned!

CONGRATULATIONS then to the podium three:

1st Sassy @ 11:54:23
2nd Victorious @ 12:02:58
3rd Smo @ 12:02:58

Smo was placed third and not joint 2nd as despite finishing at the same time as Vic, the boat was positioned some distance to the N of the correct point.

4th Perenkist (well done!)
5th newsartist
6th Rainbow
7th khilbert

001rob is still some way off and sadly, ybv_cobblerslast remains fjord-bound!!

THANK YOU to all who took part!! See you at the start of the SOL race tonight :-)
