I logged in to Silverrudder 2022 sep 13, 16:29 as guest.
Is there a boat named guest?

I did not see anything.
I could not steer
I could not enter a course

2nd thought: will all be right when no longer practice-racing??

Disappointed guest.

I think SOL-management does not like to have <guest> or <sol> active in a race. And even during practice-sailing <guest> is invisible.

In the beginning years of sailonline it was always fun chasing <sol> the very moment the race was open for registration. When practice-sailing started this was no longer done.

When the race was started <sol> could be sailed as a community boat. Skippers did not know each other; just fun of not knowing what the next move would be.

All of a sudden <sol> could not chat any more. I know why that was done; why after years <sol> is still banned from chat I do not understand.

<sol> and <guest> are positioned from race-start as -1 or 9999. OK. But why did sol-management take away all things that made navigating possible?

<guest> is still not visible/usable during practice-racing.

Seems this forum is not read/maintained by anyone who could change something in the working of Sail On Line. At least <guest> is still not navigable during practice racing.

Time to change this welcome message?

guest is intended as a spectator. As such the message "Now login with our guest account to view currently running races" is accurate, and guest being invisible is desired.

sol is available before the start of a race to:
- have a look at the race prior to registering and choosing a polar
- try out the platform without making your own account
- sailonline volunteers make use of sol to set up and inspect new races
For all of this, sol should behave as a normal boat during the pre-race period.

Once the race has started, sol should not interfere with the ongoing race.

As for whether there should be an option for "community racing", where multiple anonymous people take control of a single boat, that is another matter. I would suggest a (non-anonymous) message to the management via mail or the forum so that they can judge the interest in such a feature.

Thank you for your eloquent answer.
So log-in as sol is a better way to experience and view all the possibilities of your sailing and navigation simulation then doing so as guest.

Africa by Sea - Tangier to Abidjan

Whatever about pharaoh Necho II’s Phoenician expedition of the 7th C BCE, the Carthaginian Hanno the Navigator with more certainty sailed south from Tangier to explore the West African coast two centuries later, but how far he got is a matter of more conjecture. However, if he did the 2300nm to today’s Ivory Coast he would have found little there other than good shelter in the vast lagoons behind the dunes, much the same as today, excepting the highly industrialized port of Abidjan. Not a great haven for a stop-over but let’s take the 90ft Monohull anyway.

Azores Challenge 2025

Another almost forgotten race at SOL. For only the second time we will sail the Jester Azores Challenge route from 2016.
What is the Jester Challenge?
Every two years a group of singlehanded sailors heads for Plymouth to sail the Atlantic. The Jester Challenge is not a race in any way, shape or form, simply an opportunity for skippers to test their boats and their seagoing mettle in a supportive and non-competitive environment. Skippers can make stopovers in other ports or harbours if they so desire, and there is no stigma attached to retiring from the event. Each sailor takes full responsibility for him or herself, their boat and the equipment they carry. There are no entry fees and virtually no rules, although there are guidelines.
Our rules are a bit different and we have a 60ft trimaran at our disposal and we have 1200nm to cover. Let's see what our yachts and their skippers can do. We wonder what you will take on board?

Melbourne Osaka Cup Double-Handed Yacht Race 2025

Welcome once again to what these days is Sailonline’s almost annual virtual Melbourne to Osaka Yacht Race. In real life, this double-handed 5500 nm race between these two sister cities, one deep in the southern hemisphere, the other high in the northern hemisphere, is run every four to five years, and this year is such a year. So, this year’s online version is in sync with the Melbourne Osaka Cup 2025 organised by the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria (ORCV), and the Sandringham (SYC) and Osaka Hokko (OHYC) yacht clubs. We’ll be racing the well-known First 40, a popular size of boat which should be a good match for many of the boats entered in the real race. With the doldrums unavoidably lying across our course, you can expect to be at virtual sea for at least a month!
