THE 2021 SMPF SCHEME IS LAUNCHED!
SPONSORSHIP REQUESTS ARE WELCOMED ;)
===============================

The SMPF scheme (SYC Membership Pay Forward) will continue in 2021.

At the end of 12 races in 2021 ( one each month) one annual FREE membership to the Sailonline Yacht Club will be made available to the best finishing NON SYC member in each of the nominated races. The prize can be sponsored by any SOLer willing to do so.

The sponsors of previous editions of the SMPF scheme did either make their Sponsorship publicly known, or acted anonymously under the flag of the Sailonline Yacht Club.

The number of slots available for sponsoring one SMPF is extremely limited, as again in 2021 ONLY ONE SMPF race per month will be nominated and sponsored. SOL COOrdinator already received requests to sponsor SMPF races in 2021 , even before this thread was posted; therefore, if you are interested, please hurry up and contact me. By responding promptly to this invitation you will secure yourself a slot in the 2021 Sponsorship list

All you need to do at this time is to write to: coord@sailonline.org , and confirm your willingness to support the SMPF scheme in 2021. If available you will be granted one slot ( one month ) , and the race of that month that will be nominated for SMPF scheme will be “your SMPF race”. (Traditionally that will be the Ocean Championship race for the given month).

Some important information before you decide:

1)– Your participation to the scheme, should you want to remain anonymous, will be treated in fully confidential mode by the Coordinator and the Sailonline Nav Sim AB Board, thus there will be only three persons aware of your position in the scheme.

2)- This is by no means a solicitation to invest USD 35,00 into our platform, and you should not in any way feel obliged to adhere to the scheme.

3)- The prerequisite of not being a SYC member for the past twelve months (at the date of finishing the SMPF race) to become eligible for the SMPF scheme in case of finishing first of non-members, has been confirmed for the 2021 scheme.

4)- Should the best NON SYC member over the finish line not be eligible because lacking the requisite of point 3) above , the next in line with full qualification will be identified and declared as the winner.

5)- In 2021 the SMPF prize will be delivered directly to the winner at the end of each nominated race, without asking for acceptance or collection. The winning SOLer will be made SYC member “ex officio” and the Management looks forward to hear from him/her sometimes after delivery.

We look forward to hearing from you and to a well supported 2021 SMPF scheme! ;)

On behalf of Sailonline NAV SIM AB

SOL COOrdinator

Africa by Sea - Abidjan to Swakopmund

Our exploration of Africa by Sea continues. Next, it’s off to Swakopmund, on the water’s edge of the Kalahari desert. It’s a wind-blasted coast, and a venue of choice for those seeking to set wind-powered speed records. More likely than not, we’ll have to beat into it in our Steinlager II, to finally find some shelter behind the walls of Platz am Meer where there is a marina of sorts. Only 2200nm!

Newport to Annapolis 2025

The Newport to Annapolis race, first held in 1947, is one of the most historic and well-known US East Coast blue water races. Linking two seaports dating from the US nation's birth, Annapolis and Newport, the race contrasts the country's largest estuary, the Chesapeake Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean. Since 1969, the route has run from Annapolis through the Chesapeake Bay to Newport. The SOLers will sail 470nm in their Carkeek40s in the original direction from Newport to Annapolis, including the Chesapeake, which is such a daunting challenge that the 1997–98 Whitbread Round the World Race for the Volvo Trophy added it to the course, as did the Volvo Ocean Race in 2002 and 2006.

Transat à Deux 2025

Above you see a single-handed sailor semi-foiling his Beneteau Figaro III to the horizon. It is in fact Ireland’s Sailor of the Year and the overall winner of last year’s Solitaire du Figaro, Tom Dolan. Somehow, we got our hands on a polar for the Class, and rather than trying to surreptitiously track Tom and his mates in the 2025 edition of the Solitaire, sailing rather-short, single-handed legs across the Celtic Sea and Biscay, we thought we’d see how our virtual craft would fare on the Class’s double-handed 3900nm Trans-Atlantic, from somewhere in Brittanny to somewhere in the Caribbean via somewhere in the Canaries. Allez, mes braves!

Sinbad by Balloon 2025 - Toamasina to Baia de l'Oiseau

You may recall that when last we visited Madagascar in the company of Sinbad, the Sultan commanded our intrepid inspirator to seek out fabled islands where in Summer the sun barely set. We did and we returned but the Sultan wasn’t happy with Sinbad’s report, so here we go again, now by SOL Balloon instead of sailing vessel. Expect to be in the air for at least 2100nm and depending on how the wind brings us, anything between two weeks and two months before we shall descend at the Sultan’s given coordinates!
