Board » Technical Support » BBQ Blocks Rounding by Server

During the Lake Superior Lights race erinbrook33 reported that after rounding Michipicoten Island the Server would not recognize his subsequent rounding of East Michipicoten Light & dropped the ability of his boat from further scoring.

It was observed by Laozi that his boat BBQ'd along that costal region where the rounding was to be recorded.

This should be reviewed in case there is, for whatever reason, the possibility for the server to lose track of a boat's continuity during the progress of a race.

Having checked the track for this boat the BBQ was indeed at the 240° bearing to the mark that is listed in the NOR for this mark's rounding requirement.

bbq happened at the exact point the server should register the rounding. I don't think that's coincidence.
I know the DevtDudes will look at this but I've emailed them too... what a fascinating issue... not for erinbrook though. In all my time on Sailonline I've not encountered this.. I am wondering if it is the nature of the bbq and the way in which the server "bounces" a boat back offshore.. if it did so to the rounded side of the mark, then it would have scored as a bbq and not a rounding... with the subsequent jump continuing to compound the problem.

Hopefully erinbrook will have a valid email address and once this is sorted out we can email them with what we discovered.

The server logs unfortunately don't reveal what exactly happened, but this is my hypothesis.

Even if the bbq happened really near, it actually was just after the rounding. You can see here that at 2013-09-17:00 the next mark was already Caribou Island Light but at 19:00 it was switched back to East Michipoten Light while the boat didn't move.

At 18:23 the sailing engine process crashed while saving cached values to DB. The watchdog restarted the engine instantly but apparently erinbrook33's rounding information was not saved to DB and thus the boat was marked as not rounded even if the locaton stayed the same.

As long as I have been the admin, the sailing engine process has had the habit of occassionally dying. It happened with the old server and has continued with the new one. The problem in fixing that is that the sailing engine has to be constantly running.

So far I have considered that the sailing engine is "good enough" and just kept an eye on it. I think there has once before been a similar rounding issue during the 1.5 years I have had access to the server (at least only one other has been brought to my attention).

However, as I have now learned how to install the full SOL system to new servers, we now also have a test server which I can see if we can fix the sailing engine to be more robust. The problem is that even with normal use the problem happens 1-2 times a week, so finding the issue is not necessarily easy and takes some time.
I wish to Thank hmm for resolving this issue for erinbrook33 in the race & the forthrightness of his explanation.

Thanks to email discussions with brainaid yesterday, we now know the probable reason why the sailing engine occassionally dies. Fixing that needs some thought though but we are working on it.

Newport Bermuda Race 2026

The 636-mile Newport Bermuda Race is one of the oldest regularly scheduled ocean races, and with the Fastnet and the Sydney Hobart Race, it is one of the three great classic races of the yachting world. First raced in 1906, now in its 54th biennial, the Race can again also be participated in online. In real life, the race is open to entry in four different division – Double-Handed, St. David's Lighthouse, Gibbs Hill Lighthouse, and Finisterre Division – which in the past we have also offered online. This year, however, our online race will be all-in one-design in silky swift Club Swan 50 yachts, so that your results can count towards SOL’s SUPerBUDdy title, whilst hopefully still giving you a chance of overall line honours against the fastest yachts of the real-life Gibbs Hill Division, especially if you can find some forecast winds that don’t quite work out that way on the real water!
