Board » Flag Officers » Race proposals » Fresh water sailing without routers

There seem to be two chains of lakes in Finland, running approximately N-S, extending for 170-190 nm with no straight line course of more than 10-12 nm. Would not these courses be a bit of a change of pace for SOLers? No routers, no sleep, timed at a weekend to include the daylight hours of 'most' of the world??????

If it breaks, it's not strong enough--if it doesn't, it's too heavy.
That sounds fun - please come up with a proposal and we can get that set up.

Checkout how to make a proposal here and, if GE is not your forte, just post into this thread:

1. Race Description (info to go on RH side of homepage) including name of race, description of race and choice of boat from SOL boathouse.

2. Course - start/finish/course waypoints with their coords in decimal degrees AND geographic names (not WP1, WP2 etc).

3. If you want a piece centre-column on the Homepage, then draft that too.

:-)
There is IRL race at lake Päijänne in 20.-21.7. Lake Paijanne Race URL

Rod and JakeS - please will you cooperate with each other then to prepare the information needed to set up a suitable race and when its ready, pop it into this thread?

Thank you... kiitos!

PS I've just realised, Rod, that you aren't an SYC member so JakeS will need to make the "official" submission for a race proposal.

JakeS:- I have drawn up the two proposed courses on the SOL map. On Google Earth, the courses are not so clear as many of the channels are narrower in reality than in SOL.
The Western chain of lakes is about 157 nm, from a start at 25.5800 E, 61.0200 N to a finish at 25.3300 E 63.0500 N.
The Eastern lakes extend 196 nm, from the start at 27.9320 E 61.0713 N, to the finish at 27.0078 E 63.4971 N.
As it would need to be you who makes the formal proposal, I can only leave the rest to you.
I would suggest that there be no other marks of the course than the Start and Finish, to give a more relaxed and individual experience than we usually have.
I can send you a map of the proposed courses if needed, but I think the above description is all that you will require.
If it breaks, it's not strong enough--if it doesn't, it's too heavy.
Rod: That sounds good to me. That's IRL race on a route is not possible because of Sol's map does not show sufficient detail of all islands and narrow passes. If you can send maps / routes to me; jarkko.sepp @ hotmail.com. And I check is there any need to change. Winds at summer time comes usually from s - sw . . .
West side lake (called Päijänne) would be more comfortable to me cos our cottage is located (61.06N 26.07E) from starting line 6nm to north and the route bypassing the cottage 2 nm :)) East side lake (called Suur-Saimaa) could run maybe later from north to south? On the other hand the Suur-Saimaa Lake route have more comfy little islands. . . :))
JakeS:- Your e-mail address was rejected by my server as not existing--could you repeat here, or email me directly at rmharle@rogers.com

P.S problem was two blanks on either side of the "@". These computers are SO fussy!!!!

Red Eye - Frisian Isles Trophy 2025

For our final “Red Eye” race, we invite you to cross the Noord Zee to the Wadden Zee, where a 160nm course around a few sandy islands raced on SOL only once before in 2010 awaits you. We don’t have a replica of Erskine Childers’ Dulcibella in our boathouse, and in any case if we took her out, we might well contract more than one “Red Eye”, so instead we’ll race our very own riddle of the sands in Farr 400s!

Sinbad by Balloon 2025 - Carnarvon to Dondra

From here, our home in Bharatavarṣa is now north west of us – said Sinbad to his fellow balloonists. Perhaps we can ride the wind first further north, and then catch the winds that every year bring the rain, perhaps not. It’s 2600nm and we could be aloft awhile, so, Master el-Quarters, victuals only, no sandbags, provisioning the giant hamper. It will be not a picnic!
