August Sprints RESULTS (1) Principe (2) Moheli 1 (3) Moheli Redux

The August Sprints were again designed by MustangMark to offer a standard and a PYO (pick-your-own) course – this latter style is proving extremely popular. Located off different coasts of Africa, the courses also afforded an opportunity to explore islands with widely differing histories. Just fascinating. Each podium has reported on their races, so please read their contributions below.

The Principe race was strongly competed and the podium are to be congratulated – just ONE SECOND separated the top three. In all 38 boats arrived within 10 minutes of the first finisher. Amazing competition!

The first Moheli running got off to a brilliant start. As a PYO course the merits of N or S of the island were hotly debated. Unfortunately, the gods of electricity intervened and a power outage at Sailonline’s ISP (where a backup also failed) meant that while the race continued on, it was no longer counting for the Championship. Those who remained engaged and who waited out the not-too-long downtime, had the reward of a good race and some excellent matchracing. The podium three did an excellent job to grab the top spots, with just 10 seconds between #1 and #3.

The second Moheli running, the championship race, saw many switch from a S to a N track and due to shifting winds, there was a lot of “play” in the approach to the finish line, requiring some to even contemplate crossing the line back-to-front (which is allowable) to avoid an extra tack! Bravo to the podium, arriving within 5 seconds of each other – a total of 38 boats arrived within the first 10 minutes!!

New Ice Age 2026 - Scott Base to Neumayer Station

To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Tenerife to Fernando de Noronha

The sixth race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us back up the Atlantic to Tenerife, from whence we will depart on a classic transatlantic passage to Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha. It’s 2150nm as the albatross flies, but you will undoubtedly have to take some and sometimes sudden detours to get your Volvo 70v4 through the doldrums stretching across your path from the Amazon to the Niger.
