- Cappy is sailing in peaceful waters
- Board » In memoriam
-
During the sad moments when we became aware of the loss of Tyger , we also found out that one of the oldest and most iconic SOLers had left to a better world ……Captjack1942 …….aka ….Cappy !!.
Jack was 82 years old and spent the last 17 as very active member of our Community.
When Cappy was steering his boat, he was always willing to chat with everyone, and always gave the impression to be well acquainted with everyone, even at first chat…….
Very few guys are able to make you very comfortable even at early stages of communication ! …Cappy was one of those few.
Evidence of the above is the fact that the Community started to call him Cappy as if that was really his name and not only a nickname……..to the extent that possibly someone would not be able to understand who the other guy was if he was called Jack , or captjack……
He was and will always be…”Cappy” …for every one of us.
A few days ago I sent over to him his 2024 Performance Certificate, without knowing that it would remain undelivered …….well …here delivery is guaranteed …and with that a standing ovation and full respect from all of us .
Thank you ……. Cappy
One of those like you with a nickname only : …….your friend … WIN

At the end of each month in 2025 a file illustrating the up to date situation will be posted here.

- SOL COOrdinator's role as such ends DEC 31 2024
- Board » General Discussion
-
Hallo SOLers !
I want to inform you, the Sailonline community, that effective January 1st 2025 I will relinquish my duties of “COOrdinator” of the Sailonline platform.
During the past twelve years one aspect of this role has been the interfacing between the day to day operational side of SOL (Ops-RC-tech) and the Board of Sailonline Nav Sim AB, and as consequence of this role’s peculiarity I needed to be always attentive to whichever ongoing issue, on the ball and ready to intervene when needed and explain when requested.
It has been like working for 12 years without any annual leave. To say the least: I am slightly tired (and OLD).
Unless the two Board members, who are fully aware of my decision and with whom this matter has been discussed several times during past few years, find a volunteer to fulfill the vacant role, the role will cease to exist and the consequence will be that of more direct comms lines between Board and day to day SOL business.
This is less than 5% of what I have been doing at SOL, but the remaining 95%, that I WILL CONTINUE TO CONCENTRATE ON can be planned , and caters for annual leave (LOL)
A new job title for me will be the last of our priorities, but to explain shortly what I was doing and will still do and the new positioning in the SOL backstage , here is the answers:
I will be one of the three members of the day to day Sailonline Management Team (the other two being Jan (BONK) and Richard (Go4iT).
I will continue to work with them and for them in the areas of :
---Everything related to Championships
---Rankings in general and in particular
(Championships, SYC, Nation)
---Prizes (Virtual and material including
performance certificates and Special Series
awards)
---And some other organizational stuff that
runs behind the SOL stage.
So……basically very little changes but it will be far more relaxing for me.
Also the email address will remain, at least for now and for convenience the one you know: coord@sailonline.org
I take this opportunity to wish you ALL a fantastic and rewarding 2025 on the SOL waters, and more importantly in your personal lives.
HOLD FAST!
Piero

- 2025 SMPF SCHEME
- Board » Sailonline Yacht Club
-
THE 2025 SMPF SCHEME IS LAUNCHED!
SPONSORSHIP REQUESTS ARE WELCOMED
===============================
The SMPF scheme (SYC Membership Pay Forward) will continue in 2025.
At the end of 12 races in 2024 (one each month, under normal circumstances being the monthly Ocean Championship race)) one annual FREE membership to the Sailonline Yacht Club will be made available to the best finishing (and fully qualifying as per rules hereunder) NON SYC member in each of the nominated races. The prize can be sponsored by any SOLer willing to do so.
The sponsors of previous editions of the SMPF scheme did either make their Sponsorship publicly known, or acted anonymously under the flag of the Sailonline Yacht Club.
The number of slots available for sponsoring one SMPF is extremely limited, as again in 2025 ONLY ONE SMPF race per month will be nominated and sponsored. If you are interested, please hurry up and contact me. By responding promptly to this invitation you will secure yourself a slot in the 2025 Sponsorship list
All you need to do at this time is to write to: coord@sailonline.org , and confirm your willingness to support the SMPF scheme in 2025. If available you will be granted one slot (one month) , and the race of that month that will be nominated for SMPF scheme will be “your SMPF race”.
Some important information before you decide:
1)– Your participation to the scheme, should you want to remain anonymous, will be treated in fully confidential mode by myself and the Sailonline Nav Sim AB Board, thus there will be only three persons aware of your position in the scheme.
2)- This is by no means a solicitation to invest into our platform, and you should not in any way feel obliged to adhere to the scheme.
3) The prize will be delivered to the first NON SYC MEMBER over the finish line, who had NEVER been an SYC member before. As any NON SYC member over the finish line could be the prize winner, it is recommended that the next thread hereunder is looked at after an SMPF race , as the prize winner will be announced as soon as possible after the arrival of the first boat.
4)- Should the best NON SYC member over the finish line not be eligible because lacking the requisite of point 3) above , the next in line will be identified and so on until a fully qualifying yacht is found and declared as the winner.
5)-The SYC membership earned will start AFTER the date and time of finishing the qualifying race , as the status in that race must be and remain " NON SYC "
6)- The SMPF prize will be delivered directly to the winner at the end of each nominated race, without asking for acceptance or collection. The winning SOLer will be made SYC member “ex officio” and the Management looks forward to hear from him/her sometimes after delivery.
We look forward to hearing from you and to a well supported 2025 SMPF scheme!
On behalf of Sailonline NAV SIM AB

- LACK OF REMINDER EMAIL FOR SYC RENEWAL
- Board » Sailonline Yacht Club
-
Hi ALL !!
even with a bit of delay ,for which I apologise ,I whish to inform all SYC members that it is now a while since the usual email notification of SYC membership expiry is no longer autogenerated by the server.
This is due to some tech problems with server generated and distributed emails that we have been experiencing recently.
Our tech people are working on this and we really hope that the situation will be resolved the soonest.
In the meantime it is prudent to keep a note on the expiry date of the membership , if you want to renew without losing any SYC ranking or Championship results.
Again .....I apologise for not posting this note earler than today ,
Thank you ALL for your support.
Piero

Africa by Sea 2025 - Port Said to Tangier
Back in the 7th C BCE, pharaoh Necho II may have commissioned Phoenician sailors to explore south down the Red Sea and if possible return north via the Straits of Gibraltar. Herodotus was inclined to dismiss the story as it included reports of the sun standing in the north, which had to be nonsense. Silly old Herodotus, but who cares, 2800 years later we will repeat the feat, but we’ll go the other way round, and not in a galley but in different modern sailing yachts, beginning with the comfort of an IY 14.98 for the first leg of 1900nm from Port Said to Tangier.

Aden to Goa 2025
Europeans are primarily acquainted with the historical narrative of how spices reached their continent from distant regions. However, the spice trade from Goa to Aden predates the modern era, as detailed in this article. Sailonline is now reversing this route, organizing an eastbound yacht race of approximately 1700 nautical miles across the Arabian Sea for our 21st-century Archer 78 yachts. Wishing you fair winds and may the enticing aroma of spices guide you safely to your destination!

Lake Namtso Ice Race
To kick off our annual Ice Yachting Series, we will travel to Tibet and to one of the World’s highest lakes, Namtso, the “Heavenly Lake”, at an altitude of 4720m. Just fly to Gonggar Airport via Kathmandu, and get a taxi to Lhasa where the Dali Lama lives, then hire a truck with guide to take you and your DN and gear a further 200km north across the Nyenchen Tanglha mountains to Xianga where a 95nm triangle will be beaconed out on the ice for your enjoyment. Although like most of the Tibetan lakes, Namtso is a saline sump with no outflows, rest assured it is bitter cold there and ice is guaranteed. Mind the monks, you’ve no PL!
