Sorry guys, but I have no idea so far, except that for some reason Windows >= 7 and newer Java are not supported...

I will poke around the problem, but as I do not use Windows at all this will happen in the background at low priority unless I get help by someone with Java programming and Windows >= 7 experience.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Eddie - thanks for the update. We can all have a snoop around, this can't be the first Win7/Java new release issue so hopefully we will be able to find something on the internet.

:-D
ok...def a java 7.07 issue..i installed a vista VM machine, same problem.
Thats good to know, so it is not the win version that is making the trouble.
Uninstall Java 7 and install 6, and voila!

http://www.java.com/en/download/faq/java_6.xml
I have tried to force using Java 6 by changing the launcher file.

Could you please try what happens now? - Thanks a lot!

On Linux, I see no problems with Java 7.07, this makes it difficult for me to debug this issue...

Hi Eddie.

Just tried using my Vista machne and Java 7 and after d/l the NMEA file, when I click on it I get an error message of:

Java(TM) Web Start Launcher has stopped working

on my WIN7 machine I uninstalled Java 7 with a view to installing Java 6... but I can easily reinstall 7 and test the proxy. It will be a little later on today though.

:-)
There is a problem in the javaws.exe distributed with Java 7.

I found a detailed description here.

The problem is with the URL inside the .jnlp file, this contains something like "?boat=12345&race=123" which is needed to pass these values to the NMEAproxy. But this part of the URL makes the javaws.exe program crash.

The link above explains this in detail and the recommendation is to install Java 6 update 35 or higher, as there are many exploits (things that make your computer very vulnerable) inside Java 7 anyway...

I have added a link to the Java 6 download page to sailonline/toolbox.

I hope this helps,
Eddie

Hiya - ah, just read your update(s). I've been out and just re-d/l Java 7 to see if the fix worked but.. I see it has been superseded.

I will uninstall and go for 6.35 and see if that's OK (6 didn't work on Vists this morning but maybe I did something wrong).

Thanks Eddie! and DH and Equinox!!

Sinbad Braves the Bay of Bengal 2023
“Sinbad, you sorry sailor, why have you not told me of this great sea, this giant bay, stretching hundreds of thousands of qasbah east of Al-Hindi to fabled lands where tea and rice and rubber is abundant?” and Sinbad replied “Ahh, umm, shall I go have a look. May I take the Judel Vrolijk 62 again, it’s going to be a long voyage, perhaps a million and one half qasbah (c 3000nm)? I’ll start in Chittagong and follow the coast to the southern tip of the Hindus’ land, round Serendip, head east into the vastness of the seas, and if I’m lucky (no pun intended, oh Mighty One) I shall find land again and then head north and see where I end up”. “Fair winds, Sinbad”, said the Sultan.

Maryland to Alaska 2023
Welcome to this September edition of 2023 OCCH. This route was first sailed in 2020. At the time it was inspired by Matt Rutherford's single-handed Red Dot Expedition around the Americas in 2012, SOLer Renegade proposing a half-around from Maryland over the North into the Pacific and back through the Panama Canal, in 5 legs, 5 years later. Leg 2 across the North West Passage proved to be particularly challenging and so to create a proper Ocean Race, SRC combined Leg 2 with Leg 1 to give you a race of at least 4000nm from Maryland to Alaska, now to be sailed in our magnificent Archer 78.
