Board » Flag Officers » Race proposals » Breizh Lightning Race - tribute to Tonnerres de Brest

There will be a fiesta in Brest (my hometown) from 13 to 16th of july 2012.
5th edition of "Tonnerre de Brest". Created 20 years ago, this meeting happens every 4 years.
As a trailer, here are the first images I found, taken 4 tears ago : http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xkd8hv_les-tonnerres-de-brest-2012-le-programme-de-la-fete_sport

As July will be a month of relatively slow tall ship races on SOL, I suggest we race fast around French Atlantic Lighthouses. Most of these lighthouses are still working historic monuments, except "Petite Foule" on Yeu island : this one was rebuilt after WWII.

From Brest to Cordouan and back, sailing the Orange 125ft race boat.

Hope you enjoy the idea ! :-)

As the Atlant'Iles course was already making its way into one of the gaps in the calendar (its been too long since SOL sailed off France) this is perfect timing!

The course is now set up and if you wish to have a quick look at it, log in as the sol boat:

Username: sol
Password: sol

and then click here

:-)

23 June: The race is now closed but if anyone wants it open to review please just say so in this thread!

After problem in my race design, we unfortunately had to implement changes in the race course after the trainings started.

I'm really sorry for the inconveignence but the race would have suffered from unrounded marks if said changes haden't been made.

To show you how much I'm sorry, please check the lighthouse we had to remove....

The "Phare de Chassiron" was built in 1836 on the isle of Oléron and sits on the NW end of the island

I wish you a nice race ! :-)

I believe the changes we made yesterday won't solve all the problems, now that I reread Africa's mesg...

I guess we could put Chassiron again, just move it E on the island...

Same for Baleines : center it on the island, to keep angles and roundings as they were in regard of Petite foule and Cordouan.

As to Pen Men, we could move it East of the island...

Positions would not be as "real", but the idea of the race would be preserved... :-)

C'est fait.

I also think that as the purpose of course design is to make it easy for folks to work out where they are meant to sail, these adjustments avoid any confusion.

Merci Tarco.

This race will probably become legendary and share the title of "Beach BBQ Race of France's Atlantic Coast" with the Atlant'Iles course! :-D

Red Eye - Myth of Malham 2025

In 1947, Hugh McLean & Sons of Gourock, Scotland built a radical racing yacht for John Illingworth, soon-to-be Commodore of the RORC, to a design by Laurent Giles. With a masthead rig, giving her ‘free’ sail area per the rules of the time, and short overhangs reducing pitching, Myth of Malham went on to win The Fastnet that year and again in 1949, and to compete in numerous Admiral's Cups. In 1958, in honour of the yacht, the Myth of Malham race was conceived - a mini-Fastnet to the first lighthouse on a rock west of Cowes, Eddystone, rather than the second, to be held in non-Fastnet years. IRL this year it has been raced already, but this stops us not from “Red Eye” racing its online 230nm in Fareast 31Rs, leaving how to deal with the Isle of Wight open to your own discretion.

Africa by Sea 2025 - Maputo to Mogadishu

The fifth leg of our exploration of Africa By Sea takes us north along the length of the Continent’s succulent sub-tropical and tropical Indian Ocean coast. Much fought over by traders and colonists both well-before and after a Portuguese expedition under the command of Vasco da Gama first sailed there from Europe back in the 16th century, it is yet to be properly explored as a yachting destination. With plenty of islands off- and inshore, small and very large, there is much to interrupt your 1900nm voyage and visit in your Swan 65, from Maputo to Mogadishu! Race #1858
