Board » Flag Officers » Race proposals » Whitbread 89/90 proposal (moved from main thread)

What about the Classic Whitbread race - 85/86 edition that has epic legs or the 89/90 race. I am waiting for a reply from Farr to see if they will forward me the polar for Steinlager II in full Whitbread trim. Jeroen suggested that we can run this on alternate years when we are not doing the SWR

No worries Vince.
Our polars for the boat are buried deep in storage, but I have contacted the Navigator onboard for that race and he is going to send them to me when he gets back to NZL around the 21st of this month. I hope this will work for you. Also, please remind me around that time to follow up if you have not heard back from me.
Cheers,
Ian

Good day Ian.

If you can locate that polar I’ll owe you a ton of gratitude that I cannot repay in this lifetime. Having this polar will be the closest thing guys like myself will get to actually seeing (let alone sailing) her in real life. To quantify this: It’s like receiving an autographed expedition notes of the Everest expedition by Sir Edmund Hillary… handed over in person.
There are few out there who follow sailing or know something about sailing that has not heard of Steinlager II… Arguably the most famous boat of the last 30 years… America also comes to mind…

Thanks a ton for the effort, it will be richly appreciated by myself and SOL members alike.

Regards.

Vince

Vince,

We are looking around for this info. It is not easily coming up but we will work on it. Please give me a little bit of time.

Best regards,
Ian

Maybe this could be of help... I have the real polars of Belmont Finland II (ex. UBS Switzerland) from the 89-90 race, recorded into a Macintosh SE30 while sailing the race. I collected the polars through MacSea, and used them to "tune" the VPP I was writing at the time. As I recall, Steinlager was roughly 1-1,5 hours in 24 hours faster than Belmont, which made the race on Belmont rather a frustrating experience. On the other hand, as the race was no issue, I had plenty of time to collect the polars and work on my VPP ;-).

Here's a plot of the polars, I don't seem to find the numbers now, but I probably could get you the same in numbers by running the VPP again

Ok, I have laid my hands on that long awaited polar of Steinlager II in Whitbread trim. Thanks to Ian Gordon of Farr for this little gem! Now to get their actual course from somewhere...

Gorgeous polar WW, and nice work!
Well Done, WW

Here is the polar view in PE.
Not sure how to clean up the boat speed indicators.

Great Bear Ice Race 2025

You can fly to Great Bear Lake Airport, but if the ice is good, instead hire a pick-up truck, load your disassembled DN into the cargo bed and drive, first following the McKenzie River north, and then straight across the lake to the start of our final Ice Boat series race of roughly 100nm in length. The Airport authorities have agreed to leave all lights on, so you should just about be able to see where you are going as you zing and rumble, PL-free over the ice!

Chile Islands RTI Sprint 2025

Across the Canal Puyuhuapi from Puerto Cines on the Chilean mainland lies the Parque Nacional Isla Magdelena, and further west across the Canal Moraleda from Magdelena lie the islands of the Chonos Archipelago. Returning for the first time since 2017 we find ourselves in vari-charted waters here, with the mapping between physical islands and their names not 1:1 but rather some:some. It’s only 26nm but you could get lost! Good luck.

Christmas to Christmas Island 2025

Two waypoints, start and finish, and between them 5827 NM of two oceans. Not much time if we want to sit at the Christmas Eve table. You will need to maintain an average speed of over 10 knots, maybe quite possible with this Maxi Trimaran, but prepare your vessel well and choose the best of the many possible routes. Hands up everyone who knew there were TWO Christmas Islands?! OK, maybe you have sailed this Sailonline course before... but it's time to get ready for the 2025 challenge of racing between Christmas Island in the Pacific to Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean! It also marks the conclusion of our prestigious Ocean Race Championship 2025. Please have fun! Fair winds!

Sinbad by Balloon 2025 - Carnarvon to Dondra

From here, our home in Bharatavarṣa is now north west of us – said Sinbad to his fellow balloonists. Perhaps we can ride the wind first further north, and then catch the winds that every year bring the rain, perhaps not. It’s 2600nm and we could be aloft awhile, so, Master el-Quarters, victuals only, no sandbags, provisioning the giant hamper. It will be not a picnic!
